Deviled Eggs

A Southern Belle has a number of rites of passage, one of them being her first deviled egg tray to serve at family and religious get-togethers.     When Melicious Comiskey is the Southern Belle in question, her deviled egg recipe takes on additional religious significance as a young witch in a coven, showing her compatriots that she now has the knowledge and wisdom to be considered no longer a kid and junior member, but a fully equal lady of the coven by demonstrating her ability to consecrate each ingredient and use ancient wisdom to craft together a powerful charm to bless the new beginnings of the Easter Spring season.   First, eggs are a traditional symbol of birth, rebirth, life, growth, and optimism of the unlimited potential of the coming future. This symbolism is shared by all human cultures.   Hard boiling the eggs, (much like the bread and wine of the eucharist in the Universal Christian Church), requires the enlightened human mind to interact with what Nature provides and follow a certain set of laws of Nature to transform the raw eggs into a completely different food (as juice transforms into wine and flour transforms into bread).   The application of fire, (or electricity if you don't have a gas range), and water in a metal or earthen pot brings three of the classical symbolic elements of Nature together, and air appears to appear in the water and bubble up, (Actually they are bubbles of steam, gaseous water.), bringing all four elements together under human direction.   Powdered garlic was said in ancient times to absorb disease out of the lungs and protect by repelling negative thoughts, spirits, and energies. Melicious uses it to wish protection and good health upon those who eat of this meal, as the Easter season shows new life and new beginnings are dawning.   Yellow mustard means courageously persevering and keeping the faith until successful. In this magical recipe it symbolizes the long upcoming journey of life that has just started (or renewed).   A touch of salt is said to absorb and hold magical power for later use. This symbolizes the wish that those who eat this meal have power and courage for the long haul.   Very finely chopped parsley invokes the idea of communication with our ancestors, keeping our new beginnings this spring well-rooted in knowledge of the past. It is (was) thought to repel flies and lice, but the rest of this picnic dish will be irresistible to everybody, human and insect alike. It also freshens the breath as an inexpensive side garnish to be eaten after a meal. And parsley is associated with Persephone, the goddess of rebirth and growth, who every spring leaves her husband, Hades, to visit her mother Demeter, the Earthmother for the summertime. Parsley is also thought to protect against inebriation, which brings us to the next ingredient.   Champagne, light sparkling white wine, or white vinegar will add a tangy zing. Vinegar adds a firey energy to any ritual, and that energy often is used for self-protection on one's journey. Champagne is always used to bless new beginnings. Both come from more natural ingredients which when people put them together and give time for Nature to take its course transform into something even better. Humanity is working with Nature to achieve greatness.   Of course, the reason the eggs are called, "deviled" is because of the hot spices!   Black pepper can be used in rituals to ward off harm, which is especially appropriate for any new start, to give it a little extra head start.   Paprika, with its bright red color and hot spicy flavor, adds masculine fiery active energy to the mix.   That leaves mayonnaise as the only ingredient with no magical religious significance. Oh, wait, wait! The mayonnaise acts as a binder to bring and hold all the cooperative and contrasting flavors together, like family. That's something at least. Also, she could substitute unsweetened Greek yogurt which has connotations of lively athletic bodily health.   Melicious should have all the knowledge and ancient wisdom now to consecrate all of the ingredients and ritually combine them into a transformed whole powerful symbol of the strength of new beginnings with togetherness to refresh and renew her companions.   When Melicious serves these deviled eggs to her coven at their spring Ostara celebration, she will be upholding traditions from the most ancient beginnings of civilization that will continue for a long time to come.
