sIX: The Moathouse

General Summary

Returning back to the dungeon beneath the moathouse, the Mercenaries of the Wheel returned to the five pillared room where they encountered Gren, and opened a door on the southern wall.    Finn entering well ahead of the others noticed with his darkvision a room of bones covered in dust and cobwebs with the words "Death to all Ogres" written in common on the farthest back wall. Upon asking if the group had seen any ogres, the bones in the room began to animate and move! Skeletons where upon the mercenaries in seconds! Fleeing the room, the group fought desperately in the five pillared room, being attacked by rusty swords and arrows fired from degrading shortbows. Victorious, the mercenaries retreated back to the abandoned armory where they had found Spugnoir hours before. Setting up an alarm spell around the entrance area of the door, the mercenaries secured a well needed rest.    Awaking some time later, the mercenaries, with only way to go, headed into the abandoned prisons beneath the dungeon. It was here, near the abandoned torcher room, that Brog would be ambushed by a starving ghast! Attacking the half-giant from behind and sinking its diseased fangs into his neck, the mercenaries quickly rushed to get the creature off their companion. Putting up a fight, the creature was successful in taking down Brog, but the creature was unable to feast, thanks to Mango taking the creature down.    Healing the unconscious Brog, the bladesinger Finn took out the recently looted torch of revealing and an incense cone of dreams and lit the torch, giving off a short but brilliant purple light. Wandering the dungeons walls, with the help of the torch, the mercenaries found two secret pathways that continued into the dudgeon further.  The first of these was a hollowed out pillar in the torcher room that when opened revealed a long metal ladder that descended into the earth. The second was in the five pillared room, on the far wall was a secret door. Using mold earth on the secret door and wall of stone, the party was met with a small 10 foot room. Continuing to use the torch, the group found the far wall was yet again a secret door, and again using mold earth, revealed a large hallway. Upon revealing this, the torch also revealed a side door, that again being mold earthed away, revealed a staircase that lead back up to the upper layer of the moathouse, right behind the dragons lair with no other entrance or exit.    Taking the hollowed out pillar ladder, the group descended into an earthen tunnel, that when followed to its limit was a dead end wall of dirt. Using the previous tactic of mold earth, the dead end was revealed to be a cave in. Moving the dirt away to clear a path, the mercenaries found themselves overwhelmed with the stench of rot and decay as they broke into a long sealed crypt. As most of the group began to cough from the smell, the already immune weakened Brog began to sweat profusely. Not wanting to fight the dragon above, the group pushed on hoping to find the secret exit Spugnoir was told about years ago by the previous owners of the ruin, a group named Bahamutian Rhapsody. While attempting to cross the crypt the group was beset by the undead creatures seen by ol'Del - ghouls  After a quick but deadly fight with the creatures, the mercenaries retreated back up the ladder, Mango recognizing the onset symptoms of Filth Fever in Brog. Now with no choice, the group had to find a way to get passed the dragon or risk Brog's death in the coming days.

Operation: Last Ride

Attempting to talk to the dragon Utreshimon, Verena was sent up to talk to the beast. Upon realizing that his pets wanted to leave, the dragon decided best to eat them all and get new pets. Before everyone could leave the stairs that led to the underground dungeon, Utreshimon unleashed a blast of lightning from its mouth. Brog being caught in the front of the blast took the brunt of all the lightning. Holding a halberd in his hands, he looked down and noticed that his left hand had been touching metal, and was now a shriveled up thing on the ground beside him. Fighting for their lives, the mercenaries and Spugnoir rushed the dragon, forcing it to eventually leave the structure after Brog threw a bead of force into the dragons mouth. Angered by memories of failure, Mango would not let the dragon leave, and ordered everyone to fire at the fleeing beast. Taking aim with crossbows the mercenaries fired volley after volley. Eventually it would be Spugnoir's bolt that would bring the flying beast down to the swampy lowlands beyond the moathouse.    Taking no time, Magno and the now deathly sick Brog rushed towards Hommlet and the First Church of St. Cuthbert. Getting their hours before the filth fever could take Brog's life, Canoness Y'dey was pleaded to heal him by Mango. Agreeing only after hearing about the familiar cultists inside the moathouse, Brog was cured of the disease and had his hand reattached and reverted by holy miracles.    Staying behind Verena would attempt to harvest the dragons heart, but untrained he caused it to pulse, sending signals to the fundamentum gland, shocking the farmer unconscious and leaving him with horrible lingering scars. Returning to Hommlet days after Mango and Brog, the mercenaries of the wheel would quickly depart for Verbobonc for much needed rest and training.
