Shadar-kai
Shadow Elves, Dreadborn, Children of the Raven Queen
Sworn to the Raven Queen’s service, the mysterious shadar-kai venture into the Material Plane from the Shadowfell to advance her will. Once they were fey like the rest of their elven kin, and now they exist in a strange state between life and death. Eladrin and shadar-kai are like reflections of each other: one bursting with emotion, the other nearly devoid of it.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Shadar-kai elves are characterized by their lithe and almost ethereal physique. They have ashen, nearly corpse-like skin that may appear cracked or desiccated, a physical manifestation of their bond to the Shadowfell. Hair colors range from jet black to silvery white, often appearing wispy and insubstantial, as if shrouded in shadow. Their eyes are deep and haunting, often appearing in shades of black, grey, or pale white, sometimes with a ghostly glow that intensifies when they use their shadowy abilities. Their ears are pointed, like other elves, but their features are often more angular, with sharp jawlines and high cheekbones.
Genetics and Reproduction
Shadar-kai reproduce similarly to other elves, but their children are born with the lingering touch of the Shadowfell, regardless of their environment. The Shadowfell's influence manifests in the infants through pale, almost sickly skin tones and a preternatural calmness. Shadar-kai genetics seem to emphasize traits tied to resilience and adaptability, as their bodies have been permanently altered to exist between the states of life and death. Interbreeding with other elf subraces occasionally yields offspring with a mix of traits, but the shadowed essence always finds a way to dominate in their lineage.
Ecology and Habitats
The Shadar-kai elves have adapted to Blaezasia, a cursed island infused with necrotic energies. They prefer shadowed forests, ruins, and places close to planar rifts that lead to the Shadowfell. Their settlements are deeply intertwined with the land, with structures built into the island's gnarled and dying trees, shadow-cloaked cliffs, and haunted ruins. They tend to live in areas where the light barely penetrates, and their societies are fortified against the island's undead threats. The Shadar-kai interact with the land as vigilant stewards, performing rituals to manage the undead and using their magic to sustain what little life still thrives in the cursed environment.
Behaviour
Shadar-kai are stoic and solemn, shaped by centuries of existing in a state between life and death. They are deeply spiritual, honoring the Raven Queen and other death deities with a sense of reverence. Their emotions often seem muted, as if held in check by the Shadowfell’s oppressive influence, but they are capable of intense loyalty, passion, and sorrow when the occasion calls for it. Rituals and remembrance are a significant part of their culture, and they often reflect on the past with a sense of mournful pride. Despite their somber demeanor, they are cunning strategists and fierce warriors.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Shadar-kai have enhanced senses, with keen eyesight that allows them to see in the dark (darkvision up to 60 feet). Their connection to the Shadowfell grants them an innate sense of the supernatural, enabling them to detect shifts in necrotic energy and the presence of spirits. Their touch is unnervingly cold, a lingering effect of the Shadowfell’s energy coursing through them, and they possess a heightened awareness of death and decay.

Shadar-kai names often evoke shadow, death, or somber beauty. They may have double or triple syllables, such as:
Male Names: Tharos, Calvaron, Krenvel, Drael
Female Names: Veira, Nymira, Zareth, Elyssra

Beauty Ideals
Shadar-kai value an ethereal, ghostly beauty. Pale skin, stark contrasts in hair and eye color, and shadowy markings are seen as signs of a deep connection to the Shadowfell. Jewelry made from obsidian, shadowglass, and bones of the island's creatures are worn as both adornment and reminders of mortality. Scarification and shadow-tattoos are popular, each design telling a story of loss or valor.
Gender Ideals
Shadar-kai culture has little emphasis on gender roles, valuing strength, cunning, and spiritual dedication over physical attributes. Both men and women serve as warriors, shadowcasters, and spiritual leaders. The Raven Queen’s teachings emphasize the importance of balance, and individuals are free to express their identity without societal constraints.
Courtship Ideals
Courtship among Shadar-kai is often a somber, ritualistic affair. Partners exchange vows in shadowed glades or at ancestral cairns, binding themselves together with shadow-magic as a symbol of their union. Gifts of obsidian weapons, relics from old battles, or woven shadow-charms are exchanged. The concept of eternal love is important, and partnerships are seen as a shared journey through the shadowed realms of life and death.
Relationship Ideals
Shadar-kai value loyalty and shared purpose in their relationships. Bonds are formed through shared experiences of grief and triumph, and many couples fight side by side in the Raven Queen's name. Open relationships are common, with a focus on emotional and spiritual connections over traditional family structures. They raise their young communally, teaching them the traditions and shadow-arts from an early age.
Common Etiquette Rules
Respect for the dead and the past is paramount. Shadar-kai bow their heads in silent reverence when passing through graveyards or ruins. It is customary to offer a shadowed blessing to travelers and to speak in hushed tones within sacred spaces. Guests are expected to share in a remembrance ritual, where they meditate on their own mortality and the losses they carry.
Common Dress Code
Dark, somber clothing made from shadow-silk and enchanted fabrics is common. Shadar-kai favor hooded cloaks, veils, and shadowed armor that blends into the gloom. Their outfits often include bone and obsidian embellishments, with shadow-charms hanging from belts and armor. Armor is lightweight and designed to allow for graceful, shadowy movements.

History
The Shader-kai are some of the original elves who fought to save their final stronghold against Orcus, the sin of Pride.
The Raven Queen and the deities of death had found their courage admirable and gave them the second chance their people were looking for.
The Shader-kai work in the shadows completing the Raven Queens and Kelemvor's bidding. They are free to act on their own volition as the Raven Queen initially revived the shadar-kai to take their destinies into their own hand.
The Shadar-kai of Blaezasia are among the original elves who made a desperate stand against Orcus during the Pandora War. They fought valiantly to protect their home, and upon their defeat, their spirits were irrevocably changed. The Raven Queen, impressed by their valor and spirit, gave them a second chance, binding them to her service and transforming them into Shadar-kai. Over time, they have come to see Blaezasia as both a prison and a sacred duty, their purpose tied to the island’s history and the ever-present specter of Orcus' lingering influence.
