Jagg'Dull

On the border between The Republic of Thorns and The Vetitian Empire lies the mountain range known as The Red Spikes. These peaks are a savage land over which none of the countries claim ownership. It is mostly inhabited a slew of goblinoids, kobolds and other monsters tribes. Among them are several Orc encampments that send raids into countries on either side. From these raids came human slaves, and from them came their half-orc children. A large group of these have broken free from their tyrannical parents and banded together to form their own nomadic tribe, the Jagg'Dull.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Feminine names are pronounced with a hard vowel.

Masculine names

Masculine names are pronounced with a soft vowel.

Unisex names

Since all names are spelled the same it is only its pronunciation that determines the gender. It is rare, but not unheard of, for members of the Jagg'Dull to change the pronunciation of their own name. This can be a permanent change, or something fleeting, and other members of the tribe rarely care.

Family names

Family is unimportant to the Jadd'Dull as they consider each member to stand only for themselves. As such, they do not use family names.   Instead, their names are constructed by a given, single syllable, first name, and a descriptive surname attained through their coming of age ritual.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Jagg'Dull all speak three languages:
  • Ghroth - Their own language which is a mix between Common and Orcish, to speak with the clan.
  • Common - To speak with friends of distant lands.
  • Orcish - To threaten their enemies.

Coming of Age Rites

Upon reaching their fifteenth birthday a child is ready to become an adult. To pass from one phase to the other the child must undertake a trial. The entire tribe gathers at dawn and the child is presented to them by its mother. The mother then hands her child a dagger that she has crafted herself, in so doing she cuts the bond between them and signifies that she is the child's guardian. It is then time for the subject of the day to proclaim what undertaking they will perform to prove that they are ready for adulthood, as well as which member of the tribe they have chosen to help them through it.   The pair sets out for the task immediately while the tribe waits. It is forbidden to eat or drink anything other than water until the two return, or until dawn breaks on the next day. Should they return triumphant it is up to the child to describe what transpired, while the helper simply confirms the truth of what is told. But if they fail in the task they set out to perform it is instead the duty of the helper to tell the story.   Regardless of the outcome, a toast is raised and a great feast begins to celebrate the new member of the tribe. During the festivities, everyone tries to come up with a good name for the new adult and one must be chosen before dawn on the next day. Their name is then shouted at the rising sun.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Since their culture is one of violence the common ideal when it comes to beauty is a good physique. A finely crafted armor or a sword carried on a practical angle are both considered beautiful when it comes to fashion.   Well-toned, powerful muscles are considered very attractive. Those looking for courtship within the tribe will dress in armor that puts their muscles on display, while also rubbing them with oils to make them stand out even more.   But there is a duality when it comes to beauty and combat that is can be difficult for outsiders to understand. For it is both beautiful to show that one has fought, and is ready for combat, while it is just as ideal to show no signs of battle, and a disregard for its nature.
For example:
All scars are considered beautiful for they are stories of battles one has survived. But at the same time a body with few scars, or none at all, is beautiful because it proves that one has not been hurt.
Trimmed hair is considered beautiful for it means one is ready for combat. Long hair is considered beautiful for it means one is so confident in one's skills that it would not hinder them in combat.
Young age is considered beautiful for it is full of power, ambition, and strength in battle. Old age is beautiful because it means one has had the strength to survive every fight one has been in.

Gender Ideals

The Jadd'Dull have very little regard for gender in their everyday lives. They value everyone the same. This changes only in regards to pregnant women, who are considered stronger than others because they give of themselves so that others may live.
