Warden Graye

General, Warden Timothy Graye

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The Warden in charge of the Watch, Graye is a pariah amongst the nobility of The Carcernatorum, if only due to the fact he was born on the surface above; and exiled from it following what archivists whisper about being a ‘substantial’ amount of war-crimes. His immunity from the law both Above and Below has only fuelled his megalomania further, even if he often shirks any duties that involve holding a pen. He focuses on transforming the Watch into his own personal lackeys, plotting to climb up the social ladder Below and find his own way back to the top Above as well.   Little has been shared regarding his childhood, though it’s well known that he was born with little noble ties.

Gender Identity

Graye’s identity is firmly male, though he has an unwillingness to even consider or explore the concept. He presents himself as the perfect personification of his idea of what a ‘man’ is; militant, stoic and dangerous. This persona is often exaggerated when working with those under him, and is less of a solid identity than an amalgamation of toxic and repressed feelings.

Education

Warden Graye has very little formal education. His youth was spent bullying others and rounding up a gang of boys to terrorise the streets with, and he had little time or interest in the Scholars that passed through Rill. Before his 12th birthday, he was enlisted within the Barracks that formed when war broke out across Alendal. As the city itself was pledged to the Breach-King, he was educated in swordsmanship and little else up until his 18th year. Becoming one of the youngest Generals was no easy feat, and with the promotion Graye resorted to hiring a librarian from his home-town to educate him in literacy and politics. By time Graye is 20, he has discovered a love for literature that fed his desire for knowledge. When he gained the necessary tools and literacy to decipher them using a privately paid tutor, his studies turned to those of the occult and arcane in between battles. It’s unknown what influences or bargains with otherworldly forces that the future Warden called upon to crush several villages and cities down to dust, but his tactics and general lack of mercy are considered as corrupt as they come, learnt from years of slaughter and warfare.

Employment

Despite his reputation as a brutal general and merciless fighter being the cornerstone of his success, it was actually his banishment that began his true line of work. When the war that rose from the Odshore Rebellion was dying down, an uneasy truce was made on several conditions. The giving up of land, for now, would be accepted provided those that razed it down to the ground were punished.   Graye stood stripped of all his titles and merits in a court within his home town, a place not unfamiliar to him in his youth. He felt dread as he was slapped into irons and dragged to the nearest boat. What he believed would be the end of his life became the beginning when, upon stepping foot upon the deck, his cuffs were removed and he was informed of his true task. The Breach-King did not want to let go of it’s most rabid dog yet, and instead of being dismissed to the The Carcernatorum, a prisoner as promised, Graye was given a new uniform and title; the Warden.   His position as a Warden is a shaky one despite the fact that Breach-King Jakobi has personally vouched for him; the other Wardens plot against both him and each-other, and Graye is only just beginning to feel the full effects of the strings being pulled behind the scenes while he tries to create and pull his own.

Accomplishments & Achievements

What Graye considers his accomplishments are in-fact war crimes, and not ones that anyone will consider specifically pleasant to boast about; he does, anyway, and often. His years in the Breach-Kings army have warped his mindset to accept even the worst of atrocities if it paves the way to progress — or simply seems fun. W

Failures & Embarrassments

While Graye has no qualms with boasting about his military endeavours Above, his dismissal and the stripping of all his ranks and titles left a sour taste in the Wardens mouth; he takes offence to any reminders of the event despite the fact it led to his position as a Warden.

Mental Trauma

The majority of Graye’s childhood and young-adulthood could be depicted as traumatic, though they have only impounded a sense of superiority and ruthlessness in the man rather than causing him significantly noticeable effects. However, it’s clear that Graye is incapable of developing emotional bonds with others, let alone respecting the basic humanity of those around him, and some would attest that the characteristic comes from being under the scrutiny and orders of Breach-King Jakobi.

Intellectual Characteristics

Despite having little childhood education, Graye has paid extensively to be tutored throughout his young adulthood - and caught up quickly. By the time he’s reached 40, there’s not a scholar that can tell him anything he doesn’t already know about the Arcane and warfare. However, due to the specialisation of his knowledge, there’s areas where Graye is lacking. He has little math knowledge and detests reading and writing himself, instead opting to pass that kind of work onto his lieutenant or lower-level workers.

Morality & Philosophy

Graye’s morality can be described as thus; non-existent. The man has little respect for anyone other than himself and things that he considers his; even familial love is closer to possession, with his strict and controlling behaviour often a source of friction in all his relations. His blatant disregard for human life is often off-putting to most, and he takes an odd pleasure in that. Despite his nihilistic views of other people, he considers himself and his goals to be both important and risk-worthy.
