Odshore (Odd-Shaw)

The people of Odshore remain, officially, the one and only group of people who have repeatedly refused all claims of every Breach-King since the merchant family came into being. While the Breach-King family pushed a story of the Odshore people being invaders and untrustworthy, in truth they simply refused to hand over their own land. Two hundreds years of war from the Breach-Kings in return has resulted in the people losing the majority of what they lived and loved in to violent raids. In the present day, the people of Oddshore now reside solely within the place of their name-sake, though not without problems that their ancestors never had; the surface ruptured several centuries ago, sending a great landmass crashing against the beaches of Odshore. What once was a tropical cove has become a vast and arid desert that the people have learned to survive in.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The people of Odshore have a broad variety of languages and sub-dialects that have developed over the years through different families. It's a common known fact that most nomadic families tend to have their own dialect understandable only to other members, but for the purpose of communication the majority of Odshore can speak a common amalgamation of the original Odshoren language.

Common Etiquette rules

  • Excessive hoarding of resources or wealth is frowned upon, though not disallowed; the rich and wealthy of Odshore that do exist often redistribute portions of their wealth to local families in yearly festivals. In the same manner, even those that have little will share what they have with those in need. It's considered impolite to refuse an offering of charity, as it undermines the effort to rebuild and reunite.
  • Family is everything, and abandoning that results in being cut off from the community entirely. This has not always worked in Odshores favour, as ostracised members of the Odshore community who had purely personal disagreements with their individual families are often pressed to join the Breach-Kings legion for their own survival.
  • Common Dress code

The majority of dress-code for the people of Odshore is survival; thin layers, head coverings and loose clothing to allow as much air in and heat out. Within the cooler seasons and nights, peoples clothes tend to become more vibrant and suited more to comfort. Underneath the coverings, jewellery and body modification of all kinds is approved of.

    Ideals

    Beauty Ideals

Beauty is power and resource; to survive in the great Odshore Plain, you have to be either powerful, resourceful, smart, or all three. Physical looks take less of a focus in Odshore society, mostly due to the fact that the clothing style covers most of the skin to assist in sun protection, but also because a pretty face won't conjure rain from the skies -- but a well trained mage might.  Due to the lack of care for physical appearance remaining a certain standard, a lot of the Odshore people use jewels and scarification and paint to 'decorate' their skin ; in the cool nights there's an excuse to take off the face mask, and in the bigger cities it's common for people to attempt to show off to one another with higher quality gems and artistry, though this is considered immature to most.

    Gender Ideals

Odshore has 'unorthodox' opinions compared to the Breach-Kings legion, in that there's equal value placed on both men and women -- providing they have some capability of magic -- with little to no differences in the way any gender identity is treated. The binary system exists, but there is also an open acceptance for genders outside the binary too.

    Relationship Ideals

A relationship within Odshore often means an integration of entire families and households, as pooled resources within the nomadic sections of Odshore increases survival; if someone is in a relationship, it would be considered impolite or rude to not regularly hold meetings with the joint families in order to encourage and build rapport between the families.
