FairFeather's Emporium:

From Fabulous Functionals to Fantastic Frivolities

You could have sworn that there was no wide glass shop window here yesterday, no double red door with bright yellow trim, no turreted towers sporting mother of shell roof tiles and blue and yellow houndstooth checked silk pennants. Certainly thre was no bright blue sign with yellow letters in proud script announcing this place of business as "Fairfeather's Emporium - the Esteemed and Fabulous Purveyor of Worthy Goods for Those with Exquisite Taste". This entire amazing place simply did not exist.   But that was yesterday.   Today the wide glass window is stuffed with brightly colored silks and jewel colored potions in oddly shaped glass jars. Today the window houses musty old tooled leather spellbooks competing for attention with shiny brass gejews, and a forbidding suit of matte black armor. Today the bright red door bangs merrily on squeeky hinges wishing customers a blessed day, while the penants snap briskly in the virtually non-existant wind as though they were crowning a 15 meter racing yacht heeled over into the wind.   In short, it is today not yesterday, and Fairfeather's Fabulous Emporium is here and open for business.   As you enter, it becomes obvious that the fabulous outside is inconspicuous indeed compared to the vast halls that are arrayed in front of you. Magical? Ha! The very existence of the vaulted ceiling 20 feet tall and wide open chambers and echoing hallways many times larger than the outside of the shop proclaims loudly that Fairfeather's Emporium is arcane to its bones. Fairfeathers appears filled with many unique items, most of them boasting a premium pricetag indeed. Over here you see implements of war. In that kiosk reside curiously shaped items that speak of measuring and study of the world. To your left are tall shelves stuffed with spellbooks and scrolls, another case holds filled with vials of liquids, two of which seem to have a small piece of grey crystal in them. In one corner, behind bars, a wall of individual cubbies are locked and sealed with arcane symbols. A nearby well lit glass case is filled with glittering jewel encrusted wares. Shelves loaded with bolts of rich fabrics are positioned next to a rack filled with robes and garments.     A tall dark robed figure with an asymetrical wide brimmed hat decorated with a curling feather makes it's way quickly towards you. His robe catches the light and glistens and shines as he moves. You realize it is made of feathers, tens of thousands of feathers, overlaid in the manner of the necks of birds providing fluidity and protection from bad weather. As he approaches, he discards the robe and you see swaths of iridescent yellows and purples and greens made of even more feathers lining the inside of the garment. Poufy and shining his garments border on ridiculous, but he wears them with confidence and pizzaz. He sweeps his flamboyant hat from his head to reveal long curly brown hair, a bumpy nose and shrewd brown eyes. Those eyes see much, and hide little. He has an obvious interest - the weight of your pocketbook and the goods that might interest you.   "Welcome! Welcome to Fairfeather's Fabulous Emporium! i, am Fairfeather, the proprietor of this merchantile." His tenor voice drawls out the syllables. "I don't believe I have seen you before - or perhaps it has been a while? I am so very forgetful at times, but I would think that I would remember a party as distinguished and colorful as you."   He nods at your disclaimer.   'Perhaps then I can interest you in some of our wares. While we certainly are able to provide common goods, Fairfeathers is noted for our ability to procure exotic goods" he looks at you significantly, "of all kinds. For a price. There is always a price. We are not a bargain basement discount shop, but we carry a breadth of quality goods designed to appeal to those such as you who possess impeccable taste. You will find many rare and one of a kind items here, both mundane and arcane. My assistants will be pleased to help you, and if they cannot, I will myself engage to discover that which you seek."   For GameMasters
Fairfeather's Emporium is an opportunity to simultaneously reward your players with interesting and exotic items, and to strip them of the pointless surplus balances of gold and gems that seem to collect in D&D campaign warchests. Fairfeather has several signature characteristics. First, his shop is entirely magical and can and has been located anywhere in Arrhynsia (and in other worlds too). Second, he charges exorbitant prices for his goods so feel free to reprice items as would be appropriate in your world - the prices shown for the unique inventory provided here is merely a suggestion. Third, he will be extremely interested in purchasing or trading items from your players that may have been found as loot in their adventures. Gold and gems are less interesting to him than unique items - he has a very wealthy and eclectic clientele. He is also a great mechanism to give your players side quests or tail them into mainline quests. You may find Fairfeather is a unique opportunity to in-world transfer items between two characters run by the same player, but involved in different campaigns.   Fourth, if the purchase of goods by the party is sufficiently large (typically over 5k gold), Fairfeather will extend a special passphrase that he only gives to his "very best customers". This passphrase is "It would take a miracle" followed by the desired item - for example "It would take a miracle to find 6 doses of the antidote to amperfilatis poison." If this is uttered, Fairfeather will make immediate mental contact with the requestor, and will have the requested item delivered to the requestor. The price may be known or not at thet time of order, but typically will be no more than triple Fairfeather's cost plus his delivery fees, plus, if appropriate, a danger bonus. Almost anything can be procured through Fairfeather, however timing of delivery is not guarenteed. If a contact made this way does not result in a sale for Fairfeather, he will fail to respond in the future to subsequent requests made through this mechanism. Fairfeather does have ways (despicable and very very personal) of making dishonest or double-crossing customers regret bargaining with him in bad faith.
