Viëndyr

Demographics

About 42'500 are of Drifeyan origin, the rest, about 25'000 are foreign merchants and business people, rich immigrants, students and semi permanently residing travellers.

Government

Seat of the Queen of Drifeyer and her council.

Defences

The city walls protect Viëndyr from attacks on the side not facing the sea. It's heavily guarded at all times. The harbour also has patrols and strict inspections of all imported and exported goods.

Industry & Trade

Viëndyr is a bustling harbour city by the sea.

Infrastructure

Viëndyr is known for its extensive, complex and effective sewer system. There is also an intertwined network of roads and the vast harbour area. There is a great bridge, Founder's Bridge (or Raheryr Wavér in drifeyan) crossing the river and connecting the old city with the new city.
The three main roads in the city are Queen's street leading to the palace area, Market street, where most businesses are located, and Harbour Avenue, which leads to the harbour and is connected with market street.

Districts

There is the palace area, the promenade quarters, the southern living district, the south-eastern living district, the outer living district, the fishing district, the north-western living district, the central living district, the eastern living district, the artisans district, the noble houses, the business district, the temple area, Artist Island and new town.

Neighbourhoods:
There is the palace region, which is isolated from the rest of the city through walls and an elevation.
The business district at market street hosts some inns for business people (they tend to be of quite expensive nature).
In the artisans district the streets tend to be dirtier and the houses more simple but if you need anything repaired or custom made this is the place to go.
There are living quarters for royal guests/high status guests in vicinity to the palace, called the noble houses. That's also where ambassadors from different countries live, if they do not wish to stay inside the palace. Sadly, quite a few of these buildings are empty and more and more guests prefer to stay in the palace's quarters.
The living districts for your average citizen are the outer living district, the north-western living district, the harbour houses and the eastern living district because all the business and the harbour are in the southwest.
The remaining living districts tend to be a bit more expensive, especially the promenade quarters. Artist Island used to be quite cheap but through gentrification became somewhat of a luxury millieu. Then there are the outskirts that can be kind of scary as there are all kinds of people there, because the outskirts host the least expensie taverns and inns and therefore travelers of all sorts lurk around, be careful.
Lastly, there is a student neighborhood around the school with new, small, cheap buildings in new town..

Assets

There are many different stores selling pretty much everything your heart desires.

Guilds and Factions

The StA has a guildhouse in the city, as well as many merchant and artisans guilds. There is also professional thievery and mercenaries being sold, albeit with dubious legality.

History

The city used to be the first elvish settlement on drifeyan soil before Drifeyer was founded. It grew quickly but much of it got destroyed in the founding wars of Drifeyer and once the country was established, the city was neglected because the government moved to Anyr. The elves didn't like Anyr much though, and thus Viëndyr with its strategic position at the sea and river, was rebuilt and the government relocated there, making Viëndyr Drifeyer's capital city. In the end it proved a good move, because otherwise Drifeyer might never have become the economic power it is today.
Viëndyr has a trackrecord of getting destroyed in conflicts though, and especially during the Age of Fury in the 6th Major Civil War large parts of the city lay in shambles, including parts of the Royal Palace and the entirety of Karmiril.

Points of interest

The Palace Area, the Temple Area, Karmiril School of Magic Arts, Artist Island and the Statues of the Founder Elf and Dwarf, the harbour with its impressive ships, Prosperity Park and the market place are all great places to visit.
The headquarters of the Trading Alliance of Drifeyer international and the bank's head quarters are really nice buildings too.

Tourism

Viëndyr is another tourist hotspot not last because of its excellent night life. Many performers, musicians, dancers and actors mostly, take to the streets at night, entertaining the crowds who are interested in more avant guard art forms. There is also the infamous night market, where streetfood and goods of dubious legality are sold. It's a monthly market, never held in the same place twice in a row, as to not be discovered.

Architecture

Most buildings are made of sandstone and adorned with mother of pearl, coral or stained glass, but some of the more modern buildings are made from wood. The architecture is a mixture of elvish and dwarfish styles, which blends into a breath taking spectacle of dancing colours and swirling shapes that make the city look playful and majestetic at the same time.

Geography

Viëndyr has an area of 414.2 km2. It is located at Harbour Bay of the Drowned Sea and stretches inland in a kind of elliptic shape along the Feyr Wàmàr, which flows into the sea at Harbour Bay. Many ships go upstream from the harbour to do business farther inland, mainly in other countries and are allowed to do so after strict checking of the goods.
The climate is temperate but the air is quite humid, especially in the summer where there is also a typhoon season.
The weather changes very easily because of the sea. There's almost always a breeze blowing.

Natural Resources

Viëndyr is a city of trade and business as well as politics, education and foreign relations, there aren't any natural resources being used from the city, except for mother of pearl, which the elves dive for near the shore. There is also a fish market with fresh fish caught in Harbour Bay.
