The Vinlands
To the east of Ammaria are The Vinlands; a ragged land of rocky hills, wide plains and deep valleys. The hill-lands to the east are a wilder place; plagued with bandits, hillmen and goblin tribes. Vinlander slavers raid the hill-lands to meet their tribute to the Glasryan Emperors, along with crippling quotas of wines and meat from the west. The ragged patrols often miss their prisoner quota, inviting Glasyran slaving parties to collect the shortfall from raids on ]the free folk in the west.
The Vinlands are an unforgiving land. The terrain is filled with rocky hills, thick woods and vast, windswept plains. The climate is harsh, with long brutal winters marked by heavy snows and biting winds, and cool summers often plagued with fierce storms.
The folk of the Vinlands are as tough as the land they inhabit, resilient and resourceful, having learned to survive in such a challenging place. These hardy people are skilled hunters, gatherers and warriors, usually living in small, close communities. They have a deep respect for nature and the ancestral spirits that infuse their land, and keep their communities thriving and safe.
The main industries revolve around the Vinlands natural resources. Among the most common are;
Sheep herding and wineries: The Vinlands are famous for their prized mutton, wines and wool.
Hunting and Trapping: Due to the dense forests and abundant wildlife, hunting and trapping are crucial. Furs and pelts are major exports, highly valued for their quality and warmth.
Fishing: Many of the coastal waters and river are cold, clear and rich with fish, making fishing a vital industry. Dried and salted fish are common exports.
Forestry: The Ammarrian forests to the west provide timber, which is used for building and crafting, and also exported.
Craftsmanship: The Vinlanders are skilled artisans, creating intricate woodwork, metalwork, and woollen goods. These handcrafted items are prized exports.
Vinlanders tend to favour Hillman's armor (a crude composite of scavanged fur, hides and scraps of chainmail, which also serves as winter clothing and protexts from cold and weather), long spears, axes and bows.
