The Library Inn
Ancient beyond memory, the Library Inn was once home to the royal family and the seat of government for all of Capitalla and its associated islands and remained so until the time of King Darian, the Last. When Queen Ellia gave birth to twins, Darian began making plans to divide the kingdom according to Division River. Thus were created the East and the West. Built by Tige the Uniter and his queen, Talla of Shade It was saved from a slow and inevitable descent into ruin not long after Darian's death when the new rulers of the divided land granted the whole of the island into the sole ownership and custody of Shiv Moonsong, and her descendants in perpetuity.
Renovated and restored, it now serves several purposes: as a library, a university, an inn, and a festival ground for the seasonal markets and other traveling caravans.
Purpose / Function
Like most castles, Library Inn is comprised of several buildings situated on large and lavish grounds, surrounded by a secure wall with limited points of entrance or egress. It once housed between 7,000 and 8,000 people: royals, courtiers, nobles, staff, and servants. It was expanded under Shiv's ownership to comfortably accommodate 10,000 people inside the walls, though only about 3,000 sages, scholars, and staff live there full-time.
The Inn
Used as a colloquial catch-all, 'the inn' can refer to Crossroads Island, the old castle and its grounds, the actual inn itself, or, in the very smallest and farthest islands, for all of Capitalla.
The Old Castle
Meaning, quite literally, the entirety of the old castle. Local slang for everything inside the walls. This includes all of the grounds, the orchards, the greenhouses, the astronomy tower, the library, the inn, livestock stables and pastures, the gardens, the north dock, and several other buildings of purpose.
The Old Palace
Meaning, quite literally, the old royal palace. The apartments and rooms were converted into rentable guest space almost as soon as Shiv took over. There are rooms for every need and budget, from tourists seeking only a bunk to sleep, to the noble houses and courts of both the Eastern Kingdom and the Western Empire.
The Library
The old guard tower with its armory and barracks was converted into the library. It offers an amazingly secure place to store all of the books, scrolls, tapestries, and other media that were collected as part of the toll for using Crossroads Island.
