Sup of Sybil

A Feast Day in the Milosian Peninsula, especially among the southern cantons, celebrating the end of Summer.   In the country, Sybil's Supper is a much quieter affair than other feast days. It typically involves the eating of a bore or even a wolf, fried bread, and soups. Ale is typically drunk, even by children. These Suppers will be held only by family, or by especially close-nit communities. Tradition says the Veil of Ether between the real world and the spiritual is especially thin on this night, and strangers may well have villainous intent. Many myths of Nabas, the Wolf of Night, involve his tricking and devouring people at Sybil's Supper.   Tale Telling is often observed at the Sup, usually focusing on frightening stories. Some communities supposedly even sing spells or play magic, to show they have no fear of the monsters of the night.   In the larger settlements, meanwhile, the Sup of Sybil is a raucous event. Peasants will dress up as monsters and fright one another, and the Supper itself is often held in huge communities. The entire celebration has a whimsical air, and is more tolerated by the Host Keepers because of this. Sometimes hostesses are even hired by wealthier families to play magic for their celebrations.

History

Sybil Staggers was a Deinain goddess associated with Autumn. She also had a reputation for clumsiness, and one popular myth has her tripping and falling near a river fork. The massive antler she has on her heard tears open the way into the spirit realm, causing monsters to come forth. Sybil supposedly ran all through the Peninsula, crying for folk to stay home and allow no strangers into their houses. Sadly, Sybil herself was a stranger, and thus went with no food that night. Thus was Sybil's Supper born.
