Spell Swords and Charmed Blades

Charmed Blades are melee weapons that have had spells graven into them. How the magic of each blade is activated, and what exactly it does, is specific to the spell graven on each blade. Such weapons are very rare, now primarily the property of the patriarchs of great clans, though there are many rumors and stories of lone heroes wandering the country with a spell sword, fighting evil with their rare magics.   Several of the great clans own swords with their clan charm upon them, most famously Clan Strident of the Yfri Fields and their family sword Unicorn: "Fleet as Freedom." Legend says the blade will only burn when the wielder is ahorse, charging a foe.   The secrets of the engravings and what rituals went it them was lost, no doubt in the burning of the Great Spellery. This means not only that new weapons cannot be forged, but even that the old ones see their power waning, as time slowly wears down their engravings. A few more daring clans have attempted to re-engrave their weapons. The Ethels of Ethelbrand did so with their sword Starfire. The sword has not burned since, though neither had it done so in living memory.   These weapons of course imply that High Magic may have existed in some form before the Viisianari conquered Milos. The Orckid Empire dominated the world not through iron or steel but through their spells. Some have suggested that Orckid and Vaina may not have been the only magical nations of the ancient world. Perhaps the mythical Aernigh, who seemed to possess no weaponry, in fact wielded charmed blades that were plundered from them by the Orrish invaders. Indeed, many of the spells engraved into charmed blades are spelt in the Aernigh tongue.
