Bards Myth in Ardre | World Anvil

Bards

In ancient Milos, bards were supposedly primordial magicians who recorded and shared the news, histories, and legends of the land through magic. They were honored and feasted wherever they went. Some of these legends suggest they had great power over kings and war chiefs, leading some to suppose they used their magics to enslave the populace. They are widely understood to be the descendents of the Aethir, sorcerers from the Age of Dragons.   Throughout the Imperial and Royal Ages, Bards wandered the Peninsula, sharing poems and epics of the neighboring cantons. More than anything, their travels served to keep a relatively common language throughout the land. It was in the Imperial Age that the Vainan Tongue was brought to the Peninsula, and it was this language the Bards adopted, that their tellings might be understood everywhere.   Today, Bards still travel the land telling tales, but they are also Deinain priests, with the authority to perform marriages, oversee funerals, and even deliver babies, at least in villages where Deinain-worship is prominent. Despite the decline of their faith, Bards are still welcomed in many places for their knowledge of faraway events, though some would argue this function has been usurped by wandering ostachs and hostermen.   Modern Bards are sometimes called aethir, especially when performing marriages.
