Nabïïk Species in Arcverse | World Anvil

Nabïïk

Nabïïks are a tetrapodal species of sophont that originate from the heavily forested world Rygyl in Galactic Block 4.6.-1. They are a major political and technosocial force in the galaxy, and the inner Nabïïk worlds are renowned as excellent sources for starship and megastructure construction. In terms of technology, Nabïïk society is a bit above par for the rest of the galaxy, tending to specialize in architecture and structure engineering but also advanced in other realms of technology and science. Nabïïks are highly adaptable and good at applying knowledge to meet goals.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Nabïïks are semi-vertical tetrapods, able to ambulate on either all four limbs or the hindlimbs alone. They are digitigrade and all four limbs have have two opposable digits each. They also have three independently mobile tails, which are used for balance in motion and at rest (they often kick back on their tripod tails to use their handlike feet for tasks).

Male Nabïïks have sweeping, crescent-shaped "bladehorns" that protrude from the skull just underneath the pair of eye sockets on either side and curve backwards. These are actually large projections of the zygomatic arches. These are used in self-defense and, in ancient tradition, mating competition. The bladehorns are generally sharp enough to inflict serious damage with applied force, but not sharp enough to cut skin without significant pressure.

Genetics and Reproduction

Nabïïks do not bear live young; rather, their embryos develop in leathery-shelled eggs laid by the female after fertilization. However, males are the ones who carry the fertilized eggs in an external pouch. After the young hatch, the males are the primary caretakers.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Nabïïks are fairly common throughout the galaxy, though their population is concentrated within the bounds of their old colonial empire, centered on their ancestral homeworld Rygyl itself.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Visual

Nabïïks, like many other sophonts, are heavily reliant on their visual sense, facilitated by two independent pairs of binocular eyes. Each side of the skull has two independently mobile retinal eyes, one behind the other, which are linked in mobility and focus to their counterparts on the opposite side.

Auditory

Nabïïk hearing is enabled by a pair of long, tapering ears situated at the back of the skull, typically held down towards the neck.

Olfactory

Nabïïks have a pair of nostrils at the tips of their snouts that allow air into an olfactory processing chamber linked to both the brain (by neurons) and the respiratory system (by tracheal tube).

Tactile

Nabïïk digits are highly sensitive to touch, with gripping pads on the end of each digit to allow these arboreal sophonts to scale sheer surfaces and cross the undersides of objects with ease.

History

The Nabïïks of Rygyl are a proud and ingenious people, with a long history of engineering marvels and successful interstellar expansion stretching back hundreds of thousands of cycles.
