Sorcery Spell in Arcane Realm | World Anvil

Sorcery

Sorcery is any innate magical trait or ability specific to a creature. It is usually seen as an instinctual form of magic, that can be used passively or actively and are the inherent magical qualities of an entire creature type or species. Those individuals who either through choice or necessity, focus on the development of their talents through their sorcery are commonly known to society as sorcerers.

Types of Sorcery

Unlike the defined repeatable forms of spells, sorcery generally takes the form of abilities generally referred to as powers. What they lack in precision and repeatability, they make up for in spontaneity and dynamic uses. Powers appear in roughly two forms:     Passive traits refer to sorcery that is either part of the user's physicality and thus always active and can't be turned off or those that will reflexively activate in response to a particular stimuli. The tendency of fey species to retain their youthful appearance throughout their lifespan is a case of passive sorcery.   Active abilities refer to sorcery that usually requires a conscious effort to activate and some even require large amounts of concentration in order for them to remain active. The use of Mana Arts is a near universal example of active sorcery.

Creature Types

A big factor into what type of sorcery an individual will have, depends on how they process the background magic of the world. The magical power of the world's environment constantly flows through every living thing but different creature types metabolize magic power in different ways, leading to the diversity of sorcery.   Natural Creatures   The mana of the world's environment constantly flows through natural beings with some of the power staying inside them. Most fungi, plants and animals can only sparingly use this internal magic so very old creatures can have a surprisingly large amount of power. Sapient animals like humans can activate the mana with their bodies natural electrical potential which converts it into the magical substance, manaplasm which augments their use of Mana Arts.   Preternatural Creatures   Preternatural beings like fey and magical beasts also absorb background magic from nature, just like natural creatures. These lifeforms differ in that they don't just save some of that magic inside, they concentrate it into biomagical molecules, which are biological substances (hormones, enzymes, etc) that produce their own magic power, allowing for magical defense mechanisms or metamorphism.   Spirits   Despite originating from a parallel realm, spirits are lifeforms that also is affected by the world's magic power. They have a pretty high affinity for magic in general and are drawn to places more abundant in magic. This is due to magic being a source of energy in the material world for their internal biological processes or for spell casting.
