Lingua Contrarium Condition in Arcane Realm | World Anvil

Lingua Contrarium

Sometimes called glossolalia arcana or “speak in tongues”, Lingua Contrarium was originally mis-identified as a hex to force the victim to speak in another language they knew - in that first case, believed to be Saber - before it’s correct identification as a possible side effect of an ingredient used in a potion.   This unorthodox aliment affects the salivary glands and can take time to manifest fully, making it hard to accurately time exactly when from it’s originating source. Even in early stages it can cause mild glossolalia (or speaking in tongues), hence the name, but as infection progresses it can cause a curious condition of the speaker being only able to communicate backwards in said language. What may appear to be an annoying and even somewhat funny malady can actually be a symptom of something more serious underlying it. This condition can show the cause of mana induced underlying neural problems that can potentially progress into more serious conditions if left unchecked for long periods of time.         At present Lingua Contrarium is believed to be caused by an inexact amount of extract from Arcadian Hush Iris as there is a very narrow window where the extract is therapeutic instead of the usual forced silencing. Also the symptoms can be easily confused with neurological conditions such as aphasia. Due to this difficulty in identification of the cause, Lingua Franca is presently treated with a number of anti-stress remedies or purification potions to return back to the original form once the condition has been eradicated. Unfortunately the condition remains prevalent in areas where Healing is either much more diffuse or much less easily available, and so remains a problem around the world, even as some countries where careful measurements and other precautions have nearly lead to the total eradication of the disease.
