Greater Solomon Key Item in Arcane Realm | World Anvil

Greater Solomon Key

The Solomon Key is an ancient Grimoire, arguably the most famous and important of them all. It is estimated to be the oldest collection of magical formulas and operations, and is composed of two books or volumes. Volume 1 contains spells centered around invocations and curses to summon and constrain various spirits in order to compel them to do the operator's will. It also describes various spells designed for personal use such as how to find stolen items, become invisible, gain favor and love, and so on. Volume 2 describes various purification rituals that the operator should undergo in order to prevent spiritual contamination, how they should clothe themselves during purification, how magical implements should be used in their operations and how they should be constructed, and what animal sacrifices should be made to the spirits.     Historically, the text is said to be written by King Solomon to collect all the magical knowledge he acquired for his son to read. Eventually over the years, some of the knowledge within the book has been leaked to others outside of the royal family. Due to this he later commanded his son to hide the book in his tomb after his death. It worked out well as the original text was hidden until long after the aftermath of the Ghulat Wars.

Significance

The Greater Solomon Key is important as the foundation of pretty much all modern magical thought, especially for its influence on Alchemy and later Ordered Spellcraft. Much of its information was taken and inspired the more accessible text known as the Lesser Solomon Key which also greatly influenced magic.
