Shipsday

Once a week there is a day called Shipsday, which is a day of rest for sailors and dock workers in Hamia   In order to pay respect to Nefasi - Goddess of Storms and Seas, on the evening before Shipsday all ships must lower sail and dock. The sailors sing a shanty saluting those souls lost at sea, and those about to leave for sea. Townsfolk sing a traditional song of welcome in return. Sailors and dock workers, indeed, anyone who works with the sea or the ships that sail upon it, abstain from work the following day so as to pay tribute to Nefasi - Goddess of Storms and Seas.   There are some that also use Shipsday to give gifts of tribute to merpeople that they claim visit the town, and have rescued people from a watery grave in the past. Whether the merpeople exist is something that the citizens of Hamia enjoy debating about.
