The adventures of
The Heroes of Aratai take place in the grand walled city of
Aratai. Where four humble town guards face a rising tide of danger, darkness and trechery. Interwoven through the tale is the mythical
Sword of Aratai, forged by the initial king of the city before he was murdered by someone that history remembers only as "The Betrayer".
Aratai is strategic placement as the land connection between two continents, to the north and south, plus having a vast ocean to its east, and a large sea to its west, has earned it the common title of “Centre of the World”. People from everywhere travel through Aratai for trade.
Inside its walls one can sample the beauty and wonder of the world, as well as its greed, treachery and darkness. Bustling open air markets and concealed illegal emporiums; shining palaces and vermin-infested hovels; temples that bring light and cults that plot in the shadows; all are found in Aratai.
Although the majority of the population reflect the darker skinned heritage of its human settlers from a thousand years ago, humans of all ethnicities are seen on the streets of Aratai. There are sizable populations of dwarves, halflings and elves in the city and it is not uncommon to see tieflings, dragonborn, gnomes and half-orcs from more distant lands.
Queen Aleto is a popular ruler. She is generally considered a respected, capable, intelligent leader of the city and the lands around it. She is advised by a council of representatives from local temples, merchant guilds, wizarding schools, civil servants, noble families, and military generals. Her will is enforced by a well equipped royal guard and navy. The cream of her military are the Indigo Guard, a highly trained corps with diverse skills ranging from martial prowess, tracking and investigation skills, and knowledge of the arcane arts.
The city is divided into 14 wards, 10 inside the walled city, 2 south of the walls, and 2 on the northern peninsula. Each ward is administered by a Justiciar who ensures their ward functions well in terms of civil services, justice, arts, commerce, and taxation. Each ward has a Ward building and a guard house for the
town guard .
It is in the
West Gate Guard House that the heroes of Aratai:
Ha-Kapella,
Lona,
Sully, and
Tnemrot work and serve the citizens of Aratai.
