Gun Diathan
A medium-sized city, Gun Diathan was long ago founded by an alliance of various races to be a safe haven for those who decided to follow their own spiritual path, and has since flourished as a place of the trading of both goods and knowledge. In times of old, great debates were had between worshippers of countless gods both named and unnamed as many attempted to come to this city to find their own path and find their center be it by answering the calls of one being or many. Unfortunately that openness has turned the city into a powder keg.
Unlike many cities of this size, Gun Diathan has a democratically chosen council of leaders, known as The Servus Populerate, with individuals, known as Praese, serving 2 year terms. Depending on the popularity and abilities of the Praese, they can serve many terms, though it is always up to each if they would like to continue running. To try and limit bias, the majority of Praese have historically had to give up their ties to the more organized worshippers found within the city, though most still practice privately within their own homes. Many have even worshipped multiple deities while in office, a practice still done today despite the circumstances
In addition to the government, the main trading district has attempted to separate itself from religious influence. While some shops do offer religious items for their diety, many steps have been done to ensure that the trading district remains neutral. In more recent times, to prevent the more antagonistic groups from fighting, certain shops and stalls are only allowed to trade on certain days, with arrangements to be made by the heads of the district. Due to its location on the Ditherian river, it is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of getting goods from port cities and trading deeper into the mainland. It also acts as a crossroads between various inland trade routes. It is said that you can acquire almost anything in Gun Diathan. Though it may require you going to the underground market to buy and sell certain wares.
All of the major, and many of the minor, faiths have a presence in the city. Many of the larger and more practiced faiths, like those of Lathander, Tyr, Oghma, and Shar, have entire quarters or districts dedicated to them. Others, such as Gond, Helm, or Auril, may only have a street or a single building. As time has progressed, the navigation through these streets and districts has become difficult, since one wrong turn could easily land you in the district of your most hated god. A more recent development has seen a service where domesticated creatures, known as Dux Animales, acting as guides to get their patrons to the place within the city they need to go, taking them on a route that, while perhaps not the fastest, is most definitely the safest. All one needs to do is pay a copper or two to the various watchmen within the city.
