Becket Mills

City Lord Becket Mills (a.k.a. The Phoenix)

Until recently, Becket Mills was merely the failed descendant of the great General Lemuel Humphrey Mills, founder of the Meplaes Union. Forced to resort to begging in the smog filled streets of Steelgate, no one would have taken him for a member of what is most definitely a noble family in Meplaes.   The only son of Richard Mills, Becket was on the unfortunate end of his father's incompetence. The people around Richard had realised early on that he would amount to little and contribute less and so, despite his name, condemned him to menial tasks. Eventually, Richard's brother, Aurelius August Mills, decided to cut him out of family affairs entirely, repossessing Richard's estate and possession, leaving him and his son destitute on the streets of Steelgate. A choice was then presented to both. Continue living in squalor or go be useful in Fortress City of Steamworth. Richard decided the latter, but forbade his son the same.   So there Becket was, no pity from his uncle, no belongings to his name, alone on the streets of Steelgate at the age of 16. To his credit he survived, learning of the many underworld bands that make Steelgate their home and finding his place among them. He didn't thrive by any means, but at least he lived.   He lived in squalor until the age of his 37th year. Any time he gathered enough to potentially move out of his predicament, it would be stolen, claimed as dues on loans he was sure of not making. He had given up on returning to what he once was. To being useful like his greatgreatgreatgrandfather before him. To make a name for himself in the history books. That all changed when he mysteriously came upon a fortune of wealth.   No one knows where he got the money from and all he would say on the matter was that it was his lucky gnome, but on his 38th year, he managed to buy a house in Bucklehollow. There he was accepted as a clerk to assist the City Lord in the task of running the city. He excelled there, nothing like his father, for he had talent his father lacked.   As such he quickly rose through the ranks until, on his 51st year, he was appointed City Lord himself.
