Octari (outsider)

Octari are an ancient race of large Outsiders from the Plane of Water. During the Chaos Wars, a portal opened up and pulled part of a large pod of Octari through to the southern oceans of Aquatica. Many descended into grief because their lifetimes were left behind.
Basic Information
Their features are mostly that same as an octopus, of enormous proportions. They have huge eyes, fins on the sides of their mantel, 8 tentacles, some have 2 squidlike ones as well.
As with most sea creatures, eggs are laid in a safe place and fertilized there. 200-1000 per female are laid at a time.
All young are raised together in a communal creche (egg carrier). Everyone in the pod takes turns being on the protection detail for the egg carrier. Octari grow rapidly depending on abundant food sources. They mature in 1-2 years, but can live for eons.
Any water, but prefer salt water.
Octari are carnivorous and at times of scarce food cannibalistic. They favor fish and crustaceans. A few pods that live near hot vents have learned to like the taste of cooked food.
As they age their size can increase over the centuries to be Huge or larger (depending on access to food). They keep growing, no one knows the growth limit.
Additional Information
Octari have a loose communal society, where members can come and go as they please. They have no hereditary leader, instead they choose him/her by consensus when needed. They often defer to the Octari most knowledgeable about the subject at hand.
The Octari exhibits abyssal gigantism. Their beaks are the largest known of any octopus/squid, and more robust than that of the giant squid. The Octari also has the largest eyes documented in the animal kingdom; they measure a 12-16 in diameter, with a 4-8 in pupil.
Any water, depending on the pod, some prefer cold others warm water.
Super Genius intelligence.
Deepsight (underwater) 200 ft, watersense (blindsense) 60 ft, detect gravity 10 miles.
Civilization and Culture
Octari rarely take more than one name and that name is usually elaborate and long, including visual cues and chemical signatures. Although nicknames are commonly used as well.
Both shape and coloring of the body, especially the head, also the pattern of their bio-luminescence attract a prospective mate.
Every few years mating dances are performed. The female has her choice of males. Some choose a trial joining first, but others choose a mate for life at first sight. These Octaran link their minds and effectively become one being, their name is hyphenated and they are always together. Those with weaker mind skills aren't able to complete the joining ritual so often make joinings of convenience.
Everyone hopes to attain a mind-link with a strong mate.
Octari have a high technological society, although from outsiders it wouldn't appear so. Their culture are a decadent culture, even though they are in the technologic age. On their home plane, they were on the brink of the fusion age, but most of their scientists were left behind. Since they can see into the ultraviolet spectrum most of their writing is only visible there.
Even with the problems of living underwater, Octari have amassed large libraries. Through their magic/psionics, they are able to create dry rooms or items that are able to be written on, visually, verbally and chemically.
Octari or Aquan, also Mer, Lutran and Walaran.
They are gruff, but generous and friendly when they get to know you.
They have no need for clothes. Although some females and performers wear decorations. A harness or belt is worn if items need to be carried.
Waste of common resources, and murder.
Only a few of the Elders are currently alive, some died in the aftermath of the Chaos Wars, others from the grief of losing their loved ones.
One infamous noble Elder Octari went insane because of this separation. He descended into madness, and created or became the Maelstrom. Thinking that if he collected enough life-force energy from killing travelers that he could open another portal home to reunite with his Mate.
Allies: Lutra, Mer, and Walaran.
- Enemies: Atlantean, Krestean, and Naga.
These are the parent race of the Octarans, also called Elder Octaran in places.

Average Physique
Octari have arms and tentacles have suckers lined with small teeth, are also equipped with sharp hooks: some swiveling, others three-pointed. Its body is wide and stout, and heavy. They have long mantles and short tentacles.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Depending on the local/environment, on the Plane of Water, they loved bright coloring, but since they came to Aquatica that has changed. Here, they've started morphing to mostly dark colors with patches or stripes. They excel at creating magical tattoos.
