Etherians are believed to be the ghosts of Astralus that have passed on. It is not known if they are just the memory of previous loved ones, those who have unfinished business on this plane or trapped souls.

History

Etherians didn't appear until after a major battle in the Chaos Wars where many Astralus died. Some believe that those who "died" were actually thrown out-of-phase and never truly died. That they seek their family to get help to return. Others believe that they are actually ghosts of those that died.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They only interact with Astralus and elves. Other races can rarely even see them unless they have a touch of elven blood.
