Colonel
This rank is above major and below general in most military forces. In many forces, the colonel is the highest rank in their structure. The insignia is a stylized silver eagle, usually with one on the hat and two on the lapels.
They are staff officers and are the head of most military units. They are rarely on the front line, usually in the rear. They are rarely elected or battle-promoted, it takes at least 20 years in service to attain this rank.
Colonels are commonly over Brigades or Regiments, although they can also serve as program directors for various military programs they oversee like medical, technology, base commanders, or secret projects. They oversee 3000 to 5000 troops, with a Major as chief of staff. The colonel oversees logistics support, and personnel management, and oversees personnel training requirements.
