Black Crystal
This black crystal is very powerful, it is most commonly used in Ansible communication systems. It is one of the rarest crystals, so is highly expensive.
Crystals have high bandwidth for communication, long-distance signal transmission, and quantum entanglement. They can bond with other crystals to form a network that is very useful for this technology.
The larger crystals are called the Mothers, she is linked to the shards that are sliced from her. Those from the same face she came from are linked as well. These crystals are semi-sentient, they have an awareness of other living creatures, light//dark, hot/cold, sound, pain, etc. Mothers are empathic but have no concept of language, or physical form.
The crystals are activated by a pulse of sound, a low voltage of electricity. They are often paired with an array of other crystals composed of sunstone, moonstone, star quartz, and bloodstone. Every crystal in the array has a different specialty.
Only ansible technician of level 5 can tune these crystals together. If they aren't careful, the crystals can shatter, and the resulting explosion from their stored energy will kill anyone in the room and destroy any equipment nearby.
This type of crystal needs specific conditions to develop. Including volcanic activity when the world was young, high silica lava, rapid, cold air, and little water. A cool sun or one far from the planet the crystal grows on. All these conditions are essential.
When the crystal is cut it needs to be quick and nearly painless. Preferably at night so mother will be asleep, if she is awake, she will cause an empathic scream which can cause the whole rock face to vibrate, this can corrupt the crystals beyond use (it will sour their resonance). That will be ruinous for the singer. Although, some singers are able to lull the crystals into a deep sleep so none of this will happen.
The job of cutting the black crystals are relegated to the best singers with this ability. The guild is researching a technology that will put the crystals in stasis while they are being cut so this will never happen again.
