The City of Mereni
Settled on the northern coast of the Lake of the Chalice is Mereni, the capital city of Ceryx. An ancient city that has withstood regime change after regime change, Mereni once stood as a point of pride for Ceryx, a cultural center and a bastion of art, architecture, and history. Like most major cities, the significant presence of arcane magic within Mereni ultimately doomed it. The Severing rendered large swathes of the city uninhabitable; spared only were a few sheltered neighborhoods on the city's edge which lacked a magical footprint significant enough to see trouble from the Severing. The vast majority of the city is currently believed to be abandoned.
Government
Before the Severing, Mereni was the seat of the government of Ceryx. The Minister and the members of the Ceryssian Congress lived and worked in the heart of the city; the political machinations of the group occurred in Mereni's beautiful Capitol Plaza. The affairs of the city itself were governed by the Lords' Council, an alliance of five local noble families that claimed longstanding heritage as the aristocracy of Mereni.
In the aftermath of the Severing, the government of Mereni has broken down.
History
The settlement that would grow into the city of Mereni was constructed as Vassian fishing village almost two thousand years ago. Over the next twelve hundred years before the founding of Ceryx as a nation of the Circle, Mereni changed hands three times, falling to the empire of Alsion, then being retaken by Vassia, before establishing itself as a free city. It existed as an independent free city for almost 300 years before the Circle of Nine formed, and, as a result, the nation of Ceryx was drawn up around it. As the single largest city within the new nation's borders, and a centrally-located, accessible city at that, Mereni was the obvious choice for the Ceryssian capital. Mereni prospered as the capital of Ceryx, establishing itself as a cultural pillar of the nation and a center for the learning of the arts, sciences, and arcana.
