Dragonborn

The dragonborn (or "duargadon" in their native tongue, Draconic) are a species of Dragon -like humanoid beings from the continent Xashare. Despite their name, they do not claim ancestry from the dragons of Aorna. Rather, legend states that the dragonborn were created by Irinia, The Abundant Mother using the blood of Seshare, The Breath of Law, who they view as their direct descendant. This would make them significantly older than the dragons.   Dragonborn are extremely diverse in appearance, ranging in height from 5 to 8 feet and coloration from the deepest of blues, reds, greens and yellows to glimmering golds, bronzes and silvers. Some dragonborn have thin crests that surround their heads. Others have horns that protrude from their snout. Still others have thick stalks of flash that dangle from the backs of their head. There are scaled dragonborn and feathered dragonborn. No two look truly the same.   They live for approximately one hundred years and their life cycle is strange among the sentient species.   Born with pale gray scales, dragonborn develop their definitive traits over the first few years of their lives, growing rapidly, reaching their full size and physical development by just three years old. Parents will joke that a child grows a new inch every day - and that is not far from the truth. However, even though they look mature - and often have the strength to match, they are still children and act as such. For this reason, dragonborn parents rarely have more than two children.   Once they reach adolescence at the age of 20, dragonborn complete their physical transformation and their coloration reaches its brightest stage. However, this is matched by a difficult time in their lives, often called the "The Feral Thirst" by elders. Their ancestor, Seshare, was created using a shard of Tattarus, The Eyes in the Dark, which creates a lingering hunger for chaos and destruction. To combat this, most dragonborn go into some form of intense discipline, such as joining a monastery, entering the military or studying magic. It is easily fended off if the mind can be kept busy through self-reflection and meditation, though some find this harder then others.   By 40, a dragonborn reaches full maturity, taking the things they learned during their time of discipline and offering them to the community. As they grow older, the color of their scales fade, their feathers begin to fall to the ground, until they near death. On rare occasions, the scales of elderly dragonborn become translucent and pick up a glowing quality.   The dragonborn approach to family and community is also unique, perhaps compounded by their complex life cycle. Though they have grown accustomed to larger societies, Dragonborn are naturally solitary creatures, like their dragon cousins, preferring to live alone or in tightly woven pairs. As such, parents often expect their children to leave home as soon as 8-years-old, but that does not mean they are left without support. The entire community is expected to assist in raising them. The parents can still be relied on throughout their lives, but every dragonborn is forged by hundreds of others.   Because of their natural drive to live alone, love is particularly significant in dragonborn culture. It is seen as the ultimate sacrifice, to ignore your instincts and give your time and attention to another. Dragonborn bonds are nearly unbreakable and some will even choose to share a single name and declare themselves one being. "You are my wings," is a common dedication of love, indicating that together, they are a whole dragon.   In the Merchant Sea region, the largest population of dragonborn is found in Girduar, an isolated nation built in the marshes west of Aracia.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

In the Merchant Sea region, most dragonborn are found within the borders of the isolated nation of Girduar. However, there is also a small, but growing population in Sanctuary and many major port cities have tiny communities of dragonborn that operate as sailors, mercenaries or migrant workers.    It is generally accepted that the largest population of dragonborn in the world exists well beyond the Merchant Sea, across the Auslairic Ocean, on the continent Xashare.
