Ghoul (GOOL)

The Flesh-Hungry Horrors of Morana

A species of demon. Ghouls started appearing after the first demon was killed by a human priest. By destroying the Soul Ember, this priest was able to kill the demon. However, leaving the Infernal Furnace intact meant the magic with which demons were created corrupted the corpse and brought him back to life. However, their personality and intelligence were gone and they mindlessly hungered for human flesh.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ghouls, descendants of demons, share some anatomical features with their forebears but display distinct alterations. While demons walk upright on two legs, ghouls tend to be hunched over walking on all fours. Ghouls possess a singular head with two glowing, eerie eyes, devoid of visible pupils. Instead of traditional ears, they have angular, horn-like protrusions that serve as sensory organs for detecting sound waves. Their nose is flattened and streamlined, accommodating their heightened sense of smell. Ghouls maintain a sinister, elongated mouth with rows of sharp teeth adapted for tearing flesh. Their necks, akin to demons, are sinuous and elongated, lending a serpentine quality. From their shoulders extend powerful wings reminiscent of demons but more tattered and decayed, primarily vestigial in function. They have two clawed upper limbs ending in skeletal hands, each with elongated, bony fingers and elongated claws for grasping and digging. Ghoul skin is typically pallid, stretched tight over their emaciated frames. Their torsos are slightly hunched, with ribs protruding through their skin, reflecting their gaunt, emaciated appearance. Below the torso, they possess two long, bony legs with visible joints, offering them unsettlingly agile and limber movements. These limbs terminate in clawed, digitigrade feet with elongated toes and sharp talons. The ghouls have a skeletal structure that supports their frame, combining durability with a macabre, emaciated appearance. Internally, ghouls retain some similarities to demons, such as a singular heart and lungs, vital for limited respiration and circulation. However, their most distinct feature is their near-absence of organs related to digestion, instead relying on a central "Necrotic Core" in their chest, which serves as a conduit for storing and channelling the necrotic energies that sustain them. The Ghoul's physical form is a testament to their undead nature and insatiable hunger for the flesh of the deceased.

Genetics and Reproduction

Ghouls, being the transformed undead descendants of demons, do not engage in traditional biological reproduction or possess genetic inheritance as living beings do. Instead, the creation of new ghouls is intricately linked to the deliberate process of killing demons. This slaying involves extinguishing one of the two Gastral Flames within a demon, specifically the Soul Ember while leaving the Infernal Furnace intact.
The process of creating ghouls is driven by necromantic and dark magical forces, devoid of genetic factors or hereditary traits. Ghouls do not pass down characteristics to offspring because they do not reproduce in the biological sense. Instead, ghouls are effectively "reanimated" or "resurrected" from the remains of deceased demons, making them a unique form of undeath.
Their creation hinges on the manipulation of the demon's essence. Without the Soul Ember to serve as a restrictor for the hunger from the Infernal Furnace, the corpse of the demon becomes corrupted by the intense magic. This process gives rise to a new ghoul, inheriting some aspects of the demon's former identity and essence while being forever bound to an insatiable hunger for human flesh.
In essence, ghouls do not reproduce biologically, but rather by the act of humans killing demons by destroying only the Soul Ember.

Growth Rate & Stages

The growth rates and life stages of ghouls are distinct and closely tied to their transformation from deceased demons. Ghouls do not experience growth or life stages in the same way biological species do. Their existence is marked by a single, instantaneous transformation from deceased demons into ravenous ghouls, and they remain in this state until they are destroyed or their Infernal Furnace is extinguished.

Transformation Stage:
Ghouls begin their existence as the lifeless corpses of demons whose Soul Ember, the first Gastral Flame, has been destroyed by a human. This marks the beginning of their transformation. The moment the Soul Ember is extinguished, the intense magical energy within the demon's corpse corrupts it, triggering the transformation into a ghoul. This transformation is virtually instantaneous, with the lifeless demon's body convulsing and undergoing a grotesque metamorphosis as it awakens as a ravenous and mindless ghoul.

Maturation Stage:
Ghouls do not undergo typical growth in the way that biological species do. They retain the physical form of the demons they once were but become emaciated and hunched over, walking on all fours. While their physical appearance remains relatively stable after transformation, they do experience an insatiable hunger for human flesh, which drives their actions during this stage. Ghouls do not age or mature in the traditional sense. Instead, their existence is characterized by a constant state of hunger and the relentless pursuit of their prey.

Unending Hunger Stage:
Ghouls do not experience a natural lifecycle, and their existence is defined by an unending and insatiable hunger for human flesh. There are no distinct ageing processes, reproductive stages, or life milestones for ghouls. Their primary focus is on satisfying their relentless hunger and hunting humans.

Preservation Stage:
Ghouls have a remarkable ability to remain in their state indefinitely, seemingly unaffected by the passage of time. This is due to the preservation of their essence within their Infernal Furnace, the second Gastral Flame. They do not undergo transformations or growth in the conventional sense. Instead, they maintain their ghoul form until they are either destroyed or the Infernal Furnace is extinguished, ending their existence.

Ecology and Habitats

Ghouls, much like their demonic ancestors, have adapted to the unique and eerie environment of the Demon Continent, Morana. Their optimal habitat is one immersed in supernatural energies, where the boundaries between the living and the dead blur amidst a mysterious and mystical landscape. Although ghouls predominantly inhabit regions within the Horned Mountains and the Forsaken Range, they have also demonstrated adaptability and resilience to exist in environments where they are rarely encountered. Ghouls thrive in the heart of Morana's supernatural realm, predominantly populating the cave-like systems and dark crevices within the Horned Mountains and the Forsaken Range. These regions are characterised by an abundance of demonic and spectral flora, which provides sustenance in the form of mystical energy. Ghouls are known to burrow into the mountainsides, seeking refuge and darkness in the depths of these ranges. Because of the location of the Horned Mountains and the Forsaken Range on the two peninsulas of Morana, the ghouls are here closest to their preferred prey, the humans. Despite their preference for the mountainous regions, ghouls have showcased resourcefulness and adaptability in environments where they are less commonly encountered. This adaptability is driven by their relentless hunger and survival instincts. Some ghouls have been observed venturing into the Abandoned Bay, where the energies of the Living and Dead Oceans converge. Here, they seek to quell their unending hunger by scavenging the coastline for any sign of prey. Ghouls' survival in these varied environments is underpinned by the ability to redirect their insatiable hunger from living humans to the corpses buried in the earth. This adaptive behaviour enables them to persist in regions where they may encounter humans less frequently. However, ghouls remain most comfortable and numerous in their optimal habitat within the Horned Mountains and the Forsaken Range, where the supernatural energies of Morana's unique ecosystem sustain their existence.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Ghouls on Morana have a highly specialized and gruesome dietary preference. While they prefer human flesh, they can sustain themselves on other forms of flesh, as long as it is meat. Their dietary habits are closely tied to the seasonal changes of Morana, influencing when and how they feed.

Shade Season:
During the Shade Season, ghouls exhibit a subtle increase in activity levels. The "Shade Rain" that falls during this time rejuvenates the spectral and demonic flora, attracting prey animals to these areas. Ghouls take advantage of this by scavenging for any available flesh. They feed on the flesh of animals drawn to the revitalized flora.

Dusk Season:
The Dusk Season marks a period of heightened restlessness and increased hunting activity among ghouls. As shadows deepen and the sombre atmosphere envelops Morana, ghouls are driven by their insatiable hunger. They venture further from their usual hiding places in the mountains to hunt for any signs of flesh. During this season, ghouls primarily target the fauna of Morana, preying on animals to satisfy their relentless appetite.

Eclipse Season:
The Eclipse Season has a profound effect on ghouls' dietary needs and habits. The numbing effects of the Eclipse Zephyr decrease their hunger and render them temporarily paralyzed. With the scarcity of prey and corpses during this season, ghouls enter a state akin to hibernation, conserving their energy. They endure this period without feeding, relying on their adapted physiology to withstand prolonged periods without sustenance.

Twilight Season:
The Twilight Season triggers ghouls to reawaken from their hibernation-like state. The sinister bloom of supernatural flora attracts a significant increase in prey animals, presenting ample opportunities for feeding. Ghouls become active hunters during this season, scavenging for flesh and making the most of the abundance of prey in the rejuvenated environment.

Fullmoon Season:
The Fullmoon Season, while a tranquil time for demons and ghosts, brings heightened restlessness and increased hunger for ghouls. During this season, ghouls engage in a frenzied hunt for the fauna of Morana, driven by their insatiable appetite. The abundance of prey allows them to sustain themselves for longer, ensuring they have the energy needed to endure the subsequent supernatural seasons when feeding opportunities may be scarce.

Biological Cycle

The biological cycles of ghouls are intricately tied to the unique seasonal changes of Morana. These seasonal shifts play a significant role in influencing various aspects of ghoul biology and behaviour. Ghouls in Morana do not engage in rituals or celebrations with demons and ghosts due to their mindless nature. Instead, their adaptations and biological cycles are driven by their insatiable hunger for flesh, and they may enter a state resembling hibernation during the Eclipse Season when opportunities for feeding are scarce. During the Twilight and Fullmoon Seasons, ghouls actively hunt the fauna of Morana to satisfy their relentless appetite.

Shade Season:
During the Shade Season, ghouls experience a subtle but noticeable increase in their activity levels. The "Shade Rain" that falls during this time has a cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the demonic and spectral flora in the region. Ghouls become slightly more active, driven by their primal instincts to seek out flesh for sustenance. The rejuvenation of flora can attract prey animals, and the heightened ghostly activity may lead to more opportunities for scavenging.

Dusk Season:
The Dusk Season marks a period of restlessness and increased hunting activity among ghouls. As shadows deepen and the landscape takes on a sombre and mysterious feel, ghouls are driven by their insatiable hunger. They venture further from their usual hiding places in the mountains, searching for any signs of flesh, be it from recently deceased animals or any unfortunate creatures that may cross their path.

Eclipse Season:
The Eclipse Season has a significant impact on ghouls' behaviour. The Eclipse Zephyr numbs the land and decreases the ghouls' hunger. During this season, ghouls become calmer, with the Eclipse Zephyr paralyzing them. With the scarcity of prey and corpses on Morana during this time, they enter a state akin to hibernation, conserving their energy until more opportunities for feeding arise.

Twilight Season:
The Twilight Season triggers the ghouls to reawaken from their hibernation. Ghouls, being opportunistic scavengers, benefit from the sinister bloom that is specific to this season as it attracts more prey animals. This season represents a time of increased feeding and nourishment as ghouls hunt for the fauna of Morana, making the most of the abundance of flesh available.

Fullmoon Season:
The Fullmoon Season, while being a tranquil season for demons and ghosts, ghouls experience increased restlessness, due to their hunger increasing. During this season, ghouls continue hunting for the fauna of Morana. It's a period of crazed hunting for ghouls, allowing them to sustain themselves for longer until the next cycle of supernatural seasons begins.

Behaviour

The behaviour and psychology of ghouls on Morana are profoundly influenced by their mindless and ravenous nature, the unique seasonal changes of the Demon Continent, and their interactions within the supernatural ecosystem. Ghouls exhibit a set of primal instincts that govern their actions throughout the year, while specific behaviours are heightened or altered during Morana's supernatural seasons.

General Behaviour
Intraspecies Interaction: Ghouls are solitary and mindless creatures with no capacity for social interaction or cooperation with their own kind. They do not form packs or groups but exist as individuals driven solely by their hunger.
Predators and Prey: Ghouls are apex predators within their ecosystem, preying primarily on humans, but due to the lack of humans on Morana, they hunt the demonic and spectral fauna of the continent. They have no natural predators, as their relentless appetite and relentless pursuit of flesh make them formidable hunters.
Isolation: Ghouls are solitary creatures and do not exhibit any form of social bonding or cooperation with other species. They exist in isolation, driven solely by their insatiable hunger.

Seasonal Behavioural Patterns

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Ghouls inherit certain sensory and extrasensory capabilities from their demon ancestors while adapting to their undead and necrotic nature. These sensory and extrasensory adaptations enable ghouls to thrive in their macabre existence as scavengers of the dead.
Necrosight: Ghouls possess a unique form of perception known as "Necrosight." Their lifeless, milky-white eyes enable them to detect necrotic energy and the presence of the deceased. This ability allows them to locate corpses, even in dark or concealed environments, and discern the extent of necrotic decay.
Echolocation: Ghouls have developed echolocation as an adaptation to their nocturnal and subterranean existence. Emitting low-frequency vocalizations, they use the resulting sound reflections to navigate their surroundings, detect obstacles, and locate potential prey or scavenging sites.
Necrotic Hearing: Ghouls' auditory senses have evolved to detect the subtle sounds associated with death and decay. Their elongated ears serve as highly sensitive auditory organs, allowing them to hear the faintest rustling of carrion or the distant echoes of burial grounds.
Sensory Cold Perception: Ghouls can sense temperature fluctuations and the cold signatures of the deceased in their surroundings. This capability aids them in finding fresh corpses and distinguishing between living and deceased organisms, even in complete darkness.
Magic Insensitivity: Unlike their demon forebears, ghouls possess limited magical sensitivity. Their "Necrotic Core" dampens their ability to perceive magical auras and spells, making them less susceptible to certain magical influences while also limiting their own magical capabilities.
Intuitive Decay: Ghouls rely on their innate understanding of decay and necrotic energy. This subconscious perception, referred to as "Intuitive Decay," helps them identify the level of decomposition in corpses, assess the safety of consuming flesh, and determine the age of burial sites.
Sense of Balance: Ghouls maintain a heightened sense of balance, crucial for navigating the uneven terrain of graveyards, burial chambers, and subterranean crypts. Their inner ear and muscular coordination provide stability during their scavenging and hunting activities.
Necrotic Proprioception: Ghouls possess exceptional proprioception, allowing them to keenly sense the positions and movements of their limbs, even in darkness. This internal sense aids in their agile movements while searching for corpses or escaping predators.
Timeless Decay Awareness: Ghouls have a unique awareness of the passage of time in the context of decay. This temporal perception assists them in determining the freshness of corpses and the duration of their entombment.
Undead Resilience: Ghouls, as undead creatures, have a natural resilience to pain and physical discomfort. They can endure the sensations of rot and decay that accompany their existence, allowing them to feast on corpses without being repelled by the sensations.
Pressure Sensation (Limited): Ghouls possess a limited ability to detect variations in pressure through their clawed fingertips and the soles of their feet. This sensitivity aids them in gripping objects, such as coffin lids or burial shrouds, and traversing subterranean tunnels.
Necrotic Temperature Sensation: Ghouls can perceive variations in temperature related to death and decay. This ability assists them in locating corpses in different stages of decomposition and adapting to the cold, dark environments where they often dwell.
Necrotic Hunger and Sustenance Awareness: Ghouls can sense their insatiable hunger for the flesh of the deceased and the consumption of necrotic energy. This awareness drives their relentless pursuit of corpses to maintain their unholy existence.
Decay and Consume Sensation: Ghouls can feel the sensation of decay and consumption as they feast upon corpses. This experience serves as a source of empowerment, rejuvenating their necrotic essence and sustaining their unholy unlife.
