White Quill with Red Ink

Throughout Tamerea many people write using quill and ink. The quill is a feather of any kind of bird, though the rich tend to prefer quills of rare species, and some feathers may be reserved for specific groups/events. The ink used is typically black, though various colors are available.   When someone uses a white feather with red ink when signing a document however, one should be wary. Assassins use this combination when they have a client sign a contract. The red ink represents the blood of the targets, while the feather represents the client. When a client signs a contract with this combo is basically means that they acknowledge that the target's blood is on their hands, and that they are responsible for their death.   Every new client has a fresh white feather assigned to them when they first approach an assassin, and will use that same feather every time they take a new contract. Some of these feathers have become caked with red ink. Assassins will keep these feathers in their own case for safe keeping, while the clients will hold on to the key that opens the case. Every contract a client signs will end up in this case as well.   No professional assassin will take an assignment that was not not signed by a client using their feather and red ink. The reason they do this is for insurance, no client would want others to see how much they use the assassin's services, for a signature signed in red ink acknowledges the client's role in the assassination. The scandal would cost them dearly, especially if they signed a contract for a high ranking official or beloved public figure. If a client threatens to expose the assassination group or refuse payment, all the assassin has to do is threaten to turn over the quill and previous contracts to authorities.
