Dog, Axehandle Hound
A common sight in lumber camps, Axehandle Hounds are important nocturnal lookouts while the loggers get much needed rest, and will fiercely protect the camp from any perceived threats. Just have to make sure they can't get to the axes however, unless you want to wake up to a chewed up axe handle.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Medium sized dogs, the Axehandle Hounds have short limbs compared to the rest of the slender body. Their snouts have a vague axe-like shape to them due to a pointed chin and an upward pointed nose. Mainly reddish in color with a silvery muzzle.
Biological Traits
These hounds are very protective of the camps they live in, and if they detect any threats they will make a loud ruckus, and hound the threat until it either leaves or starts attacking. They have been known to scare off creatures several times their size.
Ecology and Habitats
Mainly found in the temperate forests of the north. Axehandle Hounds tend to sleep during the day and are alert during the evening and night hours.
Dietary Needs and Habits
These hounds can thrive on a standard canine diet, and love to chew on big sticks, especially the handles of axes that loggers use.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
A popular work animal for loggers, Axehandle Hounds are often kept as lookouts while the loggers rest at camp during the night. If they sense potential threats such as bears, wolves, etc they will start barking to alert the loggers.
Loggers must make sure to keep their axes out of reach of these dogs, for they have a habitat of stealing them to chew on the handles.
They aren't very popular as pets, due to their nocturnal activities and tendency to chew on anything that resembles a large branch.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
