Immortal

Immortals are mutated human mercenaries and monster hunters. While there are many different kinds of mercenary professions available in Anderium, the Immortals are a class in and of themselves. They are known for being expensive but very effective.

Career

Qualifications

To be an Immortal, one must have been trained at a school and undergone the mutations necessary.

Perception

Purpose

Immortals are available for hire as bodyguards, standard guards, mercenary soldiers, contract killers, and intimidation factors. Immortals will not always accept all of these jobs depending on their personal or order codex (Order of the Dragon Immortals for example will typically not serve in geopolitical armies). The original main purpose of the creation of Immortals however was to be monster hunters and this is the job many primarily seek. Monsters are quite rare but can cause immense destruction when they appear as many are purely evil and their presence in Anderium was never natural. Regular folk don't have the speed, intelligence, reflexes, or conditioning necessary to defeat most monsters in combat so enters the Immortal.

Social Status

Although the premium mercenary, many look down upon Immortals as lesser or dirty beings that are barely human. This comes from many years of brutal Immortals roaming the lands and charging large sums or even bullying locals. This is less common now but the perception has not changed for many, especially the common folk. Many hire them begrudgingly. In some places however, Immortals are held as heroes of humanity.

History

Immortals were mutated very early in the formation of mankind mainly as a method of counteracting the invasion of the many monster species plaguing civilization. With the massive genetic advantage from the mutations, the Immortals were very early on deemed premium mercenaries but did not live up to the monster hunter ambition as much. Originally the Immortals fared quite poorly as monster slayers with no doctrine or specific knowledge for the task. Over the period of the "lost years," the Immortals managed to gain knowledge over the monsters and methods of defeating them. They also grew in their combat prowess with the experience they gained. As they grew stronger, there were periods where Immortals would often go rogue or end up as common thugs and bullies which is where the stereotype comes from.
