Personal history
Tobe grew up in the Sekirke with his brother, being educated by the Sekant and the other church members. Tobe never enjoyed the lessons or being kept to such strict rules. While his brother became a part of the community there Tobe never managed to feel the same. When the time came for Brenn to have to leave Tobe was left alone in a place he didn't fit in.
He never liked that he had been named after a religious parable; Tobas and the candlemaker, so opted to go by Tobe, which the members of the church frowned upon and refused to do. He would spend time with his brother when he could but Brenn was often busy. So he started to find other ways to spend his time, Tobe began to test the church members, taking a belonging or two, leaving small tricks out to see what people would fall for. Once he became bored of that he started to steal from the visitors, the wealthy ones. After a while Corrin had had enough of his behaviour, he warned Tobe that if he continued he would begin down a path that is unholy and wrong.
Tobe didn't like the warning and chose to leave the Sekirke, joining his brother. Brenn had found out about his stealing somehow and told Tobe he had to stop. He promised he would and the brothers swore they would never lie to each other. But everyday he saw the poor suffering and starving while many had plenty. Tobe started to pickpocket from those he deemed wealthy enough to not miss it. Keeping enough to feed himself and slip into Brenn's coinpurse and giving the rest to the local beggars. Most nights the brothers would talk as they tried to find comfort on the streets. They would tell each other stories they had heard around town, knights from all over Primor, merchants who had seen the other continents, even Elves who would sell exotic wares. Brenn would also tell Tobe about their father, the brave, honourable fighter who had to leave. Tobe fought to stop stealing to be more like his father or brother but he met a young woman named Alice. Alice had a baby who she couldn't feed and was barely alive herself. Tobe took food to her everyday, even paying for a room in an inn for her. Alice eventually found a place to live, a shopkeeper was letting her stay in his shop in return for her working there.
Tobe had finally made a bigger difference. He found himself stealing more and more, thinking of how many he could help. He started to sweep the stalls in the marketplace. He was moving through the crowds when Brenn saw him, realising what he was doing he dragged him to the alley and berated him for lying, he told him he wasn't going to help him anymore and would be leaving town as soon as he could.
Tobe felt terrible, not for the thefts and stealing but that his brother was going to leave the town and his life. He decided to steal enough to give to his brother, he would make up something to explain where it was from. Tobe in his rush to stop his brother leaving swept through the marketplace taking coinpurses, but he knocked past a town guard who asked what he was doing, when shouting started about missing money Tobe panicked and ran. The guards chased him down and took him to the garrison cells.
After several hours he heard approaching footsteps. The garrison commander and famous knight Robert Falson opened the cell and let him out. Brenn was waiting outside and hugged Tobe, begging him not to do that again. Robert walked them back, not saying a word. When they returned to Robert's office he finally spoke. "Do you want more than this?" he questioned, holding up a small coin purse. Unsure, the brothers looked at each other. "Not the money, the life, don't you want more than a life of petty crimes and moving stock?". Clearly Robert recognised Brenn from the market, Brenn replied that they of course want more but they can't have a better life. Robert gave them a choice, they could return to the streets and the next time Tobas got in trouble he would face punishment, or they could join the garrison, Robert would train them and he would turn them into men.
Robert let them stay the night in the garrison and the next morning would hear their answer. Brenn and Tobas spent the night arguing over what to say. Brenn demanded they accept as he couldn't carry on with their current situation. Tobas was unsure, he was a scrappy fighter at best and never wanted to become a soldier. Brenn reminded Tobas about their father, the brave, honourable man. Brenn desperately wanted this, but he told his brother he couldn't accept unless he knew Tobas would too. Tobe decided to make up for how much his brother had done for him by accepting the offer. When morning came, the two brothers told Robert they accepted the offer and joined the garrison.
Over the next few years, Tobe was trained in combat, but at every chance he got he went out into the town, climbed the walls and ran along rooftops, loving the bustling town. He was eager to return to his old ways and pickpocket the cocky merchants or rich lords and ladies. But for his brothers sake he didn't. Tobe found single combat hard at first but over time he learnt his best option was speed and agility, rather than brute strength. Despite Robert's advice to fight directly with your opponent Tobe knew the best way to beat someone was when their back is turned, preferably when they don't even know you're there.
Tobe and Brenn met Edvard Ludlin, who had left his wealthy home to find his own success. Tobe respected the decision to leave wealth behind but found it hard to join Brenn and Ed in training, as the two were excelling at combat and Tobe disliked it. Eventually the trio saw action. A brawl between The Kinsmen and local traders had got out of hand as the militia wanted to collect tax on behalf of the Lord but the traders refused to pay to anyone except the city guard. When a fight broke out Brenn and Tobas were there to try and break it up, managing to disarm and arrest 2 men. When Robert and the rest of the guard including Edvard arrived, the fighting was quashed quickly. Edvard faced an angry Kinsman, but as one of the best fighters in the town he beat him easily. All three young recruits were praised by Robert for handling the situation without unnecessary bloodshed, something he insisted on throughout training.
