Brenn

An orphan of the town of Alcove. Brenn lost his mother shortly after she gave birth to his brother. After spending several years with the church, Brenn had to leave. He worked in the market moving goods and supplies for a tiny wage. Always spending his earnings on food for him and his brother Tobas. Brenn found himself struggling to keep his brother out of trouble, as Tobas was a natural pickpocket and thief. Eventually he was caught and held by the town guard, leading to the brothers meeting the garrison commander Robert Falson. Robert recognised the desperation the two were facing and chose to take them into the garrison and train them rather than leave them to the justice of the Lord. Brenn found new purpose in the garrison and constantly tried to make sure Tobas stayed out of trouble and committed to their new lives...   In the recent years Brenn, his brother and Edvard Ludlin have become great friends whilst training.

Personal history

Brenn was born during a harsh winter, and was raised with very little food and safety. His mother told him stories of his father who was a brave and kind man who left to fight a war. However at a young age Brenn came to believe that his father was not actually an honourable man and his mother just told him the story as it was better than the truth.   When Brenn was 4 his father returned, a crippled soldier who had been stationed in the south for the last few years. Brenn came to learn that his father had hurt himself to be allowed to return and work in the market. Within the year his mother was pregnant again, but his father was angry that they didn't have the money to support another child, as one was more than enough.   Every night Brenn heard his father and mother argue over whether to abandon the child, how they could afford to feed the children and whether or not he would even stay to support them. A few months later Brenn woke up one morning to find his father gone and anything left of worth gone. His mother was broken and had given up, and when the time came to give birth she refused to even name the child, dying minutes later.   Brenn took his baby brother to the Sekirke to try and get help, they were allowed to stay for several years and came to enjoy their lives at the church, helping setup and organise the ceremonies. The Sekant, Corrin, gave the name Tobas to Brenn's brother. He was named after the story of Tobas and the candlemaker. Brenn came to respect the church and found a strong sense of religion. But when tough times came the church told Brenn he had to go, the Corrin told them he could look after his brother for a few more years but then they needed to make it on their own. Brenn, at age 13, started to work for a trader in the market. Advertising his wares and moving stock, but the trader paid barely enough for Brenn to feed himself, let alone look after his brother.   When Tobas had to leave the Sekirke Corrin found Brenn and gave him enough money to make it through that winter. Brenn learnt that Tobas had started to pickpocket the richer members of the church. Brenn was going to tell Corrin what Tobas had done but couldn't do that to his brother. Tobas promised he would stop stealing and life went on.   At age 17 Brenn found out Tobas had been stealing from the market and told him he was finished protecting him. Brenn began to consider a life away from Alcove but the next day heard that a pickpocket had been caught in the market and coin purses were being returned to many. Brenn rushed to the garrison and begged to speak with the commander. He was sent away again and again but after half a day of waiting and refusing to leave, even after being threatened with an arrest, the commander came out.   Robert Falson, the famed knight, met with Brenn, he listened to his story, how he and his brother had grown up in poverty, without parents. After Brenn had finished Robert stood, took him to the cells, opened one of them up and brought Tobas out. He walked them back, not saying a word. When they returned to Robert's office he finally spoke. "Do you want more than this?" he questioned, holding up a small coin purse. Unsure, the brothers looked at each other. "Not the money, the life, don't you want more than a life of petty crimes and moving stock?". Clearly Robert recognised Brenn from the market, Brenn replied that they of course want more but they can't have a better life. Robert gave them a choice, they could return to the streets and the next time Tobas got in trouble he would face punishment, or they could join the garrison, Robert would train them and he would turn them into men.   Robert let them stay the night in the garrison and the next morning would hear their answer. Brenn and Tobas spent the night arguing over what to say. Brenn demanded they accept as he couldn't carry on with their current situation. Tobas was unsure, he was a scrappy fighter at best and never wanted to become a soldier. Brenn reminded Tobas about their father, the brave, honourable man. Brenn desperately wanted this, but he told his brother he couldn't accept unless he knew Tobas would too. When morning came, the two brothers told Robert they accepted the offer and joined the garrison.   Over the next 4 years the brothers trained hard, Brenn excelled at combat and strategy, showing great aptitude for leadership. While Tobas struggled to enjoy the life, he liked the streets, the busy marketplace and the freedom to do as he pleased, but he stayed true to his word, not stealing or returning to that life. They met the recruit and Lord's son, Edvard Ludlin, who they befriended. Edvard had no problem with them being orphans that came from poverty, he was embarrassed about his past too.   In late 6201 the three had their first experience of action. A brawl between The Kinsmen and local traders had got out of hand as the militia wanted to collect tax on behalf of the Lord but the traders refused to pay to anyone except the city guard. When a fight broke out Brenn and Tobas were there to try and break it up, managing to disarm and arrest 2 men. When Robert and the rest of the guard including Edvard arrived, the fighting was quashed quickly. Edvard faced an angry Kinsman, but as one of the best fighters in the town he beat him easily. All three young recruits were praised by Robert for handling the situation without unnecessary bloodshed, something he insisted on throughout training.
