The Sage Character in Anacra | World Anvil

The Sage

Her name is lost in the annals of legend. It's whispered that she forsook it when she took on the mantle of Sage. Spiritual and intellectual leader of the Dokkalfar, the First Sage, she is a survivor of Luminias and remembers the Dawn World.   Glowing silver tattoos of intricate whorling roots cover her body. She wears veils woven of spider silk and grown from delicate fungi that grow deep underground. She moves deliberately through space, every motion seemingly slow even when she makes great haste. The sage does not speak lightly, and when she does, her words are cryptic, difficult to parse for those whose minds primarily occupy the Mortal World.   The duties of the Sage are great. She stands watch upon the Walls of Waking, peering into the Depths of Dream. She watches for signs and portents and monitors the Pools of Fire that lead from the deep underground to the Underworld itself. And foremost among mortals, she knows the signs of Infernal Corruption.

Personal history

Like Ioth, Barash, and Loetne, The Sage came into being as one of the First Minds, the unbound entities that inhabited the Dawn. Little is known of her exploits or creations in this time of myth.   What is known is that in the wake of the Fall of Luminias, The Sage was one of eight First Minds who took on the shape of Elves. She, and some of her peers, became fascinated with the deep places of the newborn world of the Four Kingdoms, and with the boundaries that separated them. Where clung to the beauty of the lost Dawn, The Sage and her kin loved more the night. They became the first Dokkalfar.   But her peers were ready to delve into the mysteries of the earth and the Underworld, and The Sage still admired and loved Ioth and their companions. They were restless to explore the vast lengths and new laws of the Four Kingdoms and the Firmament . Together, they journeyed across the worlds, tangling with Fey lords, swimming beneath the oceans, escaping from a marid's palace, ate with Vindur in his garden beneath the Celestial Lights, plunged beneath the stones and tasted the blood of the earth itself, debated with Sin, challenged and tested the newborn dragons, unlocked the secrets of the Emerald Tablets, and many other grand aventures.   But there came at last an end to their journey. The mysteries The Sage learned from the Emerald Tablets drove her to leave Ioth and the companions behind, and reunite with the other Dokkalfar. She taught them the secrets of the Fifth Kingdom, for she knew better than any other mortal that it was a weak point in the Firmament, a secret way by which threats could arrive in Anacra.   The wisdom she brought back with her and the teachings she shared with the others led them to call her The Sage, and she abandoned her own name, burying it in mystery to protect her from magical retribution.   Ever since then, The Sage has ruled over the Dokkalfar as the wisest and most learned of their kind.
