Burcote
The town of Burcote lies high in The Silver Peaks, tucked away from the rest of Avalyra. Since its founding, the people there have made their livings through the productive mines built into the mountainsides. This was until recently, in the early 700s, when all communication stopped, and the town all but dropped off the map.
What few rumours escape down the mountain point to giants attacking the town, leading those few who seem to care to believe Burcote was wiped from existence, left only in ruin. In reality, giants did indeed attack the town, though only after diplomacy failed. The town's mines threatened the foundations of the giant's stronghold and, when they did not cease, and caused the stronghold to collapse, the giants destroyed the mayor's abode and installed themselves as new lords of the town. Since then, Burcote has become insular, simply sustaining themselves, high above the world, in service to the giants, who ordered the construction of a new stronghold, overseeing the town. To this day, the wreckage of the mayor's old home is left as a macabre reminder of the new order.
Demographics
The majority of Burcote's population is made up of humans and dwarves, with only a handful of elves and other races making their homes so high in the mountains. Most of these people make their living in the town's mines, as guards or hunting in the surrounding mountains, each dangerous professions in their own right.
Government
The giants rule the town with what they see as a firm but fair hand. However, what constitutes a fair hand to giants leans more towards firm for smaller races. Many in the town live in fear of their rulers, but any outside contact has been forbidden; the giants are all too aware how mortals would view them ruling a city of humans.
Defences
Burcote backs up against natural cliffs, with the southern and only approach being protected by a wooden wall, with two separate gatehouses and several towers along its length. Many of the townsfolk act as guards, providing the town solid defence against the creatures of the Silver Peaks. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, several of the giants can be found patrolling the town at almost all times, partly to keep an eye on the populace, but partly to protect their chosen domain.
Industry & Trade
Even now, under the rule of the giants, the town maintains its mining operation, though has no trade with the kingdom at large, instead dealing internally and with other giant villages through the mountains. Some rumours hold that the town deals with settlements in the underdark under the peaks, though if this is true, it is a closely guarded secret.
Additionally, the surrounding mountains are home to large amounts of forest, which Burcote utilises for construction, particularly the city wall and towers.
