Berolt Howkin

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Berolt Howkin grew up in the city he still calls home, Kyath Ennore, with his older brother, Garratt Howkin. Like his sibling, Berolt had aspirations of becoming mayor of the city. However, his dreams differed from the older Howkin in their specifics. While Garratt wanted Kyath Ennore to become a social metropolis, welcoming all walks of life, the younger brother was more interested in gold and influence. He wanted to capitalise on the town's central position to impose trade levies and the like. This, naturally, has been the cause of friction between the two brothers.

Employment

Ultimately, the position of viscount fell to Garratt, leaving Berolt to take up the station of his brother's assistant. However, due to what he would refer to as "Garratt's lack of professionalism", much of the actual day to day work falls to Berolt. The town's finances would likely fall to ruin without the younger Howkin's influence, and the majority of decisions run through him. One notable exception regards the guards' armour in Kyath Ennore. While Berolt wanted to commission them from Heat of the Moment, a well renowned blacksmith in town, Garratt overruled him. Now, the guards are armoured in overtly fancy, expensive, plate, scale and chain from Smelts of Roses.

Social

Family Ties

Berolt Howkin is the younger brother of Garratt Howkin, the brothers having lost their parents many years ago. While Garratt is a jovial, kind man, the younger Howkin is much colder and more studious. While Garratt is mayor of Kyath Ennore officially, it is a poorly kept secret that the real work is almost entirely undertaken by Berolt, who acts as his assistant. This has caused some friction in their lives, with disagreements on how to govern being quite common. Ultimately, however, Garratt has the backing of the townsfolk, and Berolt can do little to change that.

Mannerisms

While his older brother is jovial and friendly, Berolt is much more studious, preferring the company of books and scrolls to that of other people. An industrious man, he can typically be found in the town hall, attending to the duties he sees his brother having neglected. Garratt is well liked around Kyath Ennore, while the younger Howkin is more of a divisive figure. Many see him as bitter and cold, caring little for the townsfolk. However, he is not without his supporters, chief among which are the Warriors' Guild, and whispers of Berolt being the "true mayor" can sometimes be heard around the city.   Where his brother prefers the trappings of the common folk, Berolt takes a deal of pride in his appearance. He clads himself in finery, employing several servants to assist in his daily routine of bathing and styling himself. No less rotund than Garratt, indeed even more so, Berolt does not have the underlying strength that the older Howkin has gained from his time assisting hard labour around town; the younger man would not be caught dead ploughing a field.
