Dragon

Basic Information

Anatomy

Thean dragons always have four legs and an even number of wings (most commonly two). They have a tail for balance and agility, and a boxy head. Similar to griffins, dragons have hollow (but still quite strong) bones to reduce their body weight and increase ease of flying. While technically cold-blooded, dragons have the ability to produce their own heat with their fire breath.   Other than these traits, dragons vary greatly. Most have the ability to fly, but some species grow to such great sizes that flight becomes impossible. Others use their wings more as underwater propulsion, similar to penguins. Most have leathery wings with skin that connects fully to the body; some smaller species have feathery wings.   Dragons come in all sizes, from the small fruit dragons that could wrap around a human thumb, to the beasts known only as the Leviathans that tower over small mountains. Most commonly, their sizes range from that of a horse to a large elephant (not including wingspan). The different sizes of dragons are divided into three groupings.   article links to fruit, bird, leviathan dragons

Ecology and Habitats

Dragons can be found all over the world. Generally, species are not limited by location, as dragons can warm themselves from the inside with their fire breath (although most prefer to get their warmth from their surroundings and save energy for more crucial tasks, such as flight). Without climate as a limiting factor, dragon populations tend to instead depend on the availability of food.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The use of dragons varies by subtype and subspecies, but generally, the domestication of dragons has greatly contributed to ease of life on Thea. Dragons are a common source of transportation (for both goods and people), and are frequently used in military escapades alongside hippogriffs.

Average Intelligence

Dragons are smart enough to be trained by humans, but do not nearly approach the mythic wisdom seen in some Earth myths. Their intelligence could fairly be likened to that of a particularly sharp border collie.
