Naming Tradition / Ritual in Amanor | World Anvil

Naming

Naming is a cherished Amazon tradition by which people can be given a title or a moniker in recognition of great deeds. These bynames are known simply as Names, but are sometimes also referred to as Famous Names, Heroic Names, and Names of Power.   Once earned, a Name is permanent, and it is rare -- albeit not unheard of -- for an Amazon to have more than one Name. Many Amazons do not have Names, never having achieved something that would earn them one.

Giving a Name

An Amazon cannot simply give themself a Name. It must be given to them by their peers in reconginition of something great. Many things can be grounds for a Naming: a heroic feat performed in the midst of bloody battle, witnessed by other great warriors; an unparalleled record set in an athletic competition, the athlete's name chanted afterwards in unison by an awestruck audience; a grievous injury suffered when slaying a fierce beast, later borne with great pride; or a long record of wise words spoken and clever suggestions made to others, all of which have brought success and prosperity to the entire community.   A Naming is most often a spontaneous event that is sparked by numerous members of a community being simultaneously of a similar mind to recognize someone else's greatness. The rules of Naming are entirely unwritten, passing from generation to generation as tradition and also varying somewhat from temple to temple.   An Amazon that is named is usually not allowed to refuse the name that their fellows have decided for them. Should a community be in disagreement about the exact form of a Name -- whether it be Orcbane or Orcslayer, for example -- the preference can be given to the person-to-be-named themself or to the person that first came up with the idea of Naming them. Such things can also be decided upon by the community by vote or simple arguing.

Using a Name

A Name -- for example Silverfoot -- can be used in addition to a person's given name or it can replace it entirely. Since Naming occurs spontaneously and on a largely unofficial level, it can take varying amounts of time for a specific name to reach its final form and usage. A warrior famed for her speed and agility can first be known as Diana the Silverfooted, later as Diana Silverfoot, and then simply as Silverfoot.
