The Battle of Keremma Dunes (V)

A major battle between the forces of the Southern Church and the Sidhe Courts of Emain Ablach, resulting in the collapse of organized Druidic religion until the Bleed and the Faith's dominance of The Armorican Peninsula.

Summary

Following the collapse of Ys and the firm establishment of the Southern Faith as the state religion of Kernev, the organized resistance to the Church began to crumble. Fragan, a disciple of St. Guenole, raised an army and marched on Montroulez, capturing the city and driving the fleeing army out to sea. The leaders of the refugee fleet sought the aid of the Sidhe Courts of Emain Ablach and Albia, forming an alliance with them. A naval invasion was launched to retake Leon(organization:ebeb56da-93f3-4ee2-b4c7-47d8d57000ba), the fleet emerging from roiling grey stormclouds into Bedouar near what is now the @[Bro Bagan. Fragan and his wife Guen had built a castle among the Dunes of Keremma, which became the focus of the attack before moving on to retake Montroulez. Fragan looked out over the water, the masts and green sails of the ships so thick they appeared to be a forest moving towards the land. A small army was raised and marched towards the shore to intercept the invaders as they disembarked on the beach. All hope seemed lost as the small force stared down the 1000 ships of Faerie, until the blast of a horn was heard over the dunes. A large army, led by Guenole, appeared miraculously, making the crossing of the Meneziou Are from Kernev in a day, an impossible task. Thus rallied behind the banner of the Exalted Sun and with the holy powers of the Saint, the mortal army surged and overran the Fae ships. The fleet was shattered, the Sidhe Queens fleeing with what remained. Their allies banished back to Faerie, and the Druidic cause collapsed entirely. The survivors were burnt at the stake along the beach. Fragan rode through the ranks to congratulate his mentor, only to find Guenole had vanished completely...

Historical Basis

The battle marked the final breath of the organized political control of the Druids as the Southern Church and its political allies emerged victorious. Historians believe the effects of Faerie Time (Kairos) in the years following the Tearing of the Great Veil may be fully seen here, as Guenole had been an active participant in the Fall of Ys and the Founding of Kemper, as well as this battle 200 years later. It was effects like this that thwarted earlier attempts to subdue the influence of the Sidhe. The effects were felt as the last of the druidic circles were put to the torch in Lower Breizh and Faerie Magic subsided until the beginning of the Bleed.

Spread

The legend of the battle has been spread actively by the Southern Church, although not nearly to the extent as the story of the Fall of Ys. The Battle of Keremma Dunes is mostly relegated to dusty history books and the occasional ballad, and remains the study of academics, not the masses.

Variations & Mutation

The details of the battle itself change dramatically from version to version, especially concerning the strength of the Sidhe fleet and the role of Guenole, who ranges from merely a dreamlike inspirational vision to Fragan to a fully armed wizard-warrior shooting fireballs from atop a dragon. The role of Guen, wife of Fragard, also changes frequently, with her role and description expanding or shrinking based on audience.
