Board Games

  • Fidchell (Fortunate Isles/Akitania) - A strategy game played on a square board between two evenly matched opponents, each capturing their opponents conical pieces to control the board. A traditional board is divided between a side with yellow gold pieces and a side with white bronze on a silver board, but most are produced with lesser materials, such as tin, wood, or stone, though the names remain. Pieces are captured by flanking a single piece with a opposing pieces on two sides of a line. Masterwork Fidchell sets crafted by the Eladan are capable of moving themselves by huderezh, and are even thought to have divinitory properties.

    Casual Games

  • Birinig (Letha) - A popular game in the public houses and ports of the Penn-ar-Bed of Letha. A wooden box (85 x 55 cm) is placed on a table, a meter-high mast affixed to one end of the box. A wooden ball on a rope is hung from the mast, and 9 pins are placed opposite it in a 3x3 pattern. The wooden ball must be rotated in a complete circle to knock down all the pins. After 3 attempts, play is passed to the next participant.
  • Boules (Northwest Kornôgel) - An outdoor bowling game, played on a flat area 2-3 meters wide and 15-20 meters long, surrounded by a wooden frame. A small ball is tossed out onto this field, and heavier balls are tossed out, with the goal of being the nearest to the target ball. Knocking away an opponent's balls and ricocheting off the side boards are both valid strategies. This game is banned in Gallia by the Church with a fine of 40 Sol, in an attempt to encourage the nobility to take more interest in sports related to warfare. While this ban has in the past extended to Letha and Tolosa, it is rarely enforced and widely ignored by all walks of life. Several regional variants exist, including games played on sand or balls rolled up an inclined board with the intention of going the farthest without falling off.
  • Boultenn (Letha) - A popular bowling game in Kemper, three balls are placed horizontally on a block with rounded indents. 6 other balls are given to dislodge these balls.
  • Bowling (Northwest Kornôgel) - Pin bowling is popular, and each region has its own rules.

    Festival Games

Letha's Fest-Noz (Night Festivals) are lively affairs, often connected with other important festivals and hastiludes. Some popular events at these local affairs are:
  • Baz Yod (Letha) - A popular feat of strength. 2 participants sit face to face with their feet flat against a board as they each attempt to pull a stick towards them. In the Kontelezh Dreger, there is a variant called Bazh a Benn, which involves teams of more players, struggling over a longer stick
  • Bazhig Kamm (Letha) - A ball game played on flat ground with oak branches, naturally bent at one end. The goal is to get the ball into a hole the opposing teams guards. The game can last for several hours.
  • Gouren (Letha) - A Lethaned form of wrestling. Opponents fight barefoot, wearing a short sleeved white shirt, a belt and black pants stopping just below the knee. Two fighters grapple, grabbing each others shirts and attempt to throw their opponent to the ground. Both shoulders touching the ground simultaneously is rewarded the most points, while 1 shoulder is rewarded less. The winner of a gouren match traditionally is given a four-leafed white clover brooch of some precious metal available to the community.
  • Gwernian ar berchenn (Letha/La Manche) - Caber toss.
  • Soule (Letha/La Manche/Anjev/Gallia) - A team sport originating in Fomorian La Manche generally revolving around getting a leather ball filled hay, bran, horse hair or moss into an opponent's goal. Very loosely structured and often violent, getting the ball out of an opponent's hands with punches, kicks or sticks is encouraged. The goals were often far apart, stretching between two entire communities, leading to the games being quite large with numerous participants.
  • Weightlifting - A popular feat of strength in Dreger, where an axle is gradually loaded with weight as a participant lifts it.
  • Games of Chance and Skill

  • Azar - A popular dice game that has spread out from Alkebulan. A "Caster" rolls 2 dice and calls out a number (5-9 inclusive), called a "Main" and either "Nicks" (wins) or "Outs" (loses). After 3 outs, the caster changes. This is controlled by an impartial overseer. If the first roll is not the Main, it becomes the "Chance." If the "Chance" is rolled again before the main, the Caster wins.
  • Bard's Dice - Six-sided dice, 2 players: each roll both dice and the highest sum wins. As basic as it comes.
