The Conflict
Prelude
Following the death of Kont Ricuin of Naoned, Lethan King Nevenoe I chose a Lethan nobleman, Lambert to serve as Kont. The King of Gallia objected, as Lambert's father had previously fought against the king, and instead appointed an Akitanian from, Renaud de Centcloches. Renaud took advantage of Nevenoe's illness to launch an attack into Lethan territory, but his plot was revealed and he was killed by the King's son, Erispoe I.
Lambert took control of Naoned, and Nevenoe, now recovered, began to expand into Gallian territory. Campaigning in Akitania and Tolosa, Gallian King Charles I, was unable to respond to Nevenoe's provacations, allowing the Lethan host to march on Cenomannie. Charles made peace with Grand-Duc Pepin II of Akitania and Lambert, turning his attention to Nevenoe. Hearing that a group of discontented Lethan nobles would defect to his side if he acted quickly, the Gallian king forwent a religious festival in Threetower to march on the Lethan host.
The Gallians brought a force of 3,000 soldiers. Nevenoe, raiding in Cenomannie, represented a much smaller, but significantly more mobile force of light cavalry.
Seeing the greater numbers of the Gallian host, Nevenoe lured Charles into the marshlands of
Redon
along the Oud River, near a large abbey.
Lethan mobility, and greater knowledge of the wetlands, proved decisive, allowing Nevenoe to overcome the greater forces of Gallia while they were mired in the mud.
Following his defeat, rumors circulated that Charles of Gallia had been killed in the wetlands, forcing him to abandon his campaign to make an appearance in Ar Mans to prove otherwise. Despite rebuilding his forces, the opportunity had been lost, and further campaigns into Lethan failed to materialize, while Letha raided the March with impunity. An agreement was signed between the two nations.
With Nevenoe's victory, Letha was consolidated from a series of disparate clans into a single kingdom for the first time since the time of Ker-Ys. Borders would expand to contain the
Marches of Neustria, an expansion that would continue under King Erispoe.
