Chapter 12, Session 1: Consumption
General Summary
Now you see Ez, it is a small, trifling thing really... I need you to revive when I die so that I can fly.Mimsi woke from her nap to feel The Spectre's Estate running across the mountainside whilst The Spectre began to ask her if she ever considered taking up spellcasting. It didn't take long for Mimsi to be told of the stupid decision her party made and how the Spectre had chosen to flee during the ensuing fight with the Prowler... though they were eventually convinced: after a series of back and forths with the party and Mimsi screeching from around 600ft away, that the party had defeated the Prowler's and the Spectre immediately dragged the creature's bodies to their doorstep and, with a rusted bonesaw began to butcher the creature before Kodo took over the grisly business with more efficiency after Thordak pleaded with the Spectre to allow the party to do the work. During this time, The Hunt spoke to Thordak and told him they felt ready for him to take the next step in their bond with eachother... though he would need Ez to help him reach that point when the Hunt visited tonight. With the combat resolved, Olympia decided to go for a walk to speak to the Knowing in more detail after the entity panicked upon seeing Ez and the rest of the party accepted the Spectree's offer of hospitality and set themselves up in the Spectre's library: a sprawling magical space filled to the brim with books, musings and commentary on all kinds of topics by the Spectre over the course of their life. Here was where the party split up:
- Kodo asks Ez an extremely reasonable favour whilst the druid is having a mental breakdown.
- Ez and Mimsi went together to research the Entities to see what new information they could gleam about the End and the Stringed respectively.
- Thordak decided to break into the Spectre's personal bedroom to gain access to their journals to try and figure out what exactly happened between the Spectre and the Arch-inquisitors that led to their group breaking down and the Spectre being branded a traitor.
- Kodo moved to the cooking section to research ancient recipes to make for Ez.
- Fen wandered relatively aimlessly before settling on researching spellcraft and asking the Spectre to find them a spell of 'Tasha's Otherworldly Guise' (though they wish to rename it 'Drahz's Otherworldly Guise').
- Fen completed a small measure of research, learning that the personal recordings of the Spectre detail their many experiments with spells: often ending disastrously. Upon completing some more research Fen later worked with the Spectre in return for receiving a spell scroll of Tasha's Otherworldly Guise, while the Spectre found the spell Fen offered the party snacks made from the Prowler they killed: foul tasting food that was both disparately raw and charred to a burn. In return for doing this (though Fen did spare Kodo from eating it and ate his portion in a moment of sacrifice) Fen was able to add Tasha's Guise to his spellbook.
- Kodo researched over a dozen unique and strange recipes from the past and added them to his cookbook in the hope of cooking them for Ez to enjoy moments from his past. The recipes included: Trollbread- sweet apple syrup bread Dragonbreath crystal- rock candy style sweets with elemental infusions Flaymoth tea- psychoactive tea made with underdark moths Kobold Kola- bitter tasting non-alcoholic beverage, the writer had a clear hatred for it Dwarven Beard-Buster - A potent alcoholic shot that causes hair to literally wiggle. Designed to be strong enough for poison and toxin-resistant drinkers. Tastes like liquid gravel, it phases in/out of a crystalline mouthfeel. Omnicultural ramen - A bowl of wispy broth in which noodles from hundreds of different cultures fade in and out of existence, each tasting unique. Worlds may submit their noodle recipes to the noodle library when an agent from the Noodle Initiative visits your plane for inspection. This soup must be summoned. Castle Pie - It's just a meat pie shaped like a castle. Except for all of the peas and carrots which try to defend their home from the siege at dinner. It is often served to new soldiers to teach strategy. Sylvan-Ears - Hardened sugar treats shaped like leaves. The name arose from elven kids changing them into the shapes of their ears as a joke. Sounds like ‘souvenirs’, which is a popular reason to get these. Crème Bulette - Bet you never knew Bulettes even made milk, let alone that it could be turned into delicious desserts! This rich custardy treat brings joy to those who manage to break the incredibly hard, stony crust that forms on top. Some find they can comfortably eat stone for a short time after eating this. Sweetsilk Shrouds - An edible poncho made of durable sugar threads spun by gummy silkworms. Not water resistant at all. Spun for you while you wait, though sometimes worms hitch a ride on the garment. Devil's Hair Deathnoodles - A bowl of long, reddish pasta, flash fried using a miniaturized portal to the Hells. Has a very spicy, smoky, sulfurous flavor. Must sign a lengthy waiver because the noodles may animate and choke you if not chewed well. Invented by a succubus who also believed the way to a heart was through the stomach. Synonym Buns - Dough balls that are actually concentric spheres of differently flavored bread. Each inner layer is more delicious than the last. But for a few minutes, you can't reuse nouns. You must find another way to say it. A common dinner game played with friends. Oaky gnocchi - Butter-fried dumplings made of acorn flour and served with goodberry drizzle. Sometimes made with mushrooms. A traditional Druidic recipe Tarrasco Sauce - Illegally spicy hot sauce, allegedly grown from peppers fertilized by a Tarrasque. The Dragonborn that runs this bar hoards various spicy sauces and slathers them on everything. Counts as a weapon in some localities. Mummy Dunkers - These crispy, morbid treats resemble mummy fingers, wrapped in starchy edible paper. Often served with an actual golden dipping sauce During this time, Kodo also had a conversation with the Wanderer in which they expressed their disgust at mortals after reading some of the Spectre's smut: they then revealed their name used to be Exploration before they were trapped behind the door and became the Wanderer, they implied they controlled the weather once and that also there were scores of nations beyond Alturis... rather than the endless ocean they despised. The Wanderer finished by offering Kodo the chance to fly himself if, in return, Kodo became the Consumed key of the Wanderer in the same manner Fen did for the Chaos: though doing so would kill Kodo so he would need to have a healer ready and so Kodo went looking for Ez.
- Thordak read through the Spectre's personal accounts in their journals and read as they reflected on an adventuring career filled with joy and adventure and one they seemed to dwell on as they reflected on their adventures again and again with bitterness festering more and more, eventually Thordak spoke to the Spectre and they removed their mask, revealing their horrifically scarred features including their destroyed eyes and mouth as they were effectively mutilated to a point of seemingly near-death, they expressed that they left the Inquisitors after watching Nirya Moonbrook, Xan Prayerkeep and Grumph Fellblade set fire to a school for mages and slaughter any that tried to escape as they could only watch. From there they created Masked Magicka to protect mages from the likes of Xan and were attacked by him with 8 trained Inquisitors whom they killed but suffered horrifically from their injuries since. They then told Thordak that Xan Prayerkeep was an orphan whom they saved and that, despite his deeds, they wished to see him happy again rather than being the miserable monster they had seen in the last 10 years. Thordak then decided to simply wander the library with the Spectre, sharing jokes and asking about his lineage to which the Spectre told him his Moonbrook origin was not special which is what, ironically, made him special whilst they admitted it was strange that they never learned of Thordak's existence as a child as he was so well-hidden. Thordak then left the Spectre to head outside to meet the Hunt, hoping Ez would also be there.
- Mimsi researched the Stringed primarily, learning they were once a God called 'Fated' who was a god of luck in all forms and that after they were banished through the gate of the Grand Mix, divination and luck as a concept disappeared. When Mimsi attempted to learn more from the Stringed, she realised the entity was working hard to believe Mimsi would protect it but felt it was inevitable that it would be locked away again. Mimsi then moved away from Ez for a short time to speak to the Spectre where she became increasingly perturbed that the Spectre was unable to remember Ez constantly to the point that Mimsi and Kodo decided to take the Spectre out of the estate to find Ez and see what was happening between the two of them.
- Ez completed endless research on the End, learning that the End was seen as a predatory dark figure that waited at the death of men and reacted with fury if they were returned to life. However, deeper research led Ez to find an entry by Daisy Horizon commenting on their love of the End and their issues with the simplified view of it, Ez then thought back to Daisy in an attempt to recover a memory of her: giving him a vision of the tiefling girl dead on the ground with a hole in their chest and a smile on their face as they looked up at Ez and gutterally whispered 'you didn't mean to... it's okay' this sent Ez into a spiral as he felt a primal force throw him away from this memory and Mimsi consoled him for a time before Ez, in bunny form to calm himself, hopped away, remembering he was due to assist Thordak this night.
