Julik

The home to millions of people, both good and bad

Julik is the capital city of Woodwither Kingdom, it is an utterly massive city that stretches as far as the eye can see. It is populated by about two million different life forms. Julik is teeming with life around every corner, one never knows what lies ahead. The total area of Julik is about 5 thousand square miles or 12,945 square kilometers. It is rumored that it would take about four days of nonstop walking to get from one end of the city to another. About ten years ago the King decided to stop expanding the city outwards and has recently begun constructing upwards. Most of the buildings are getting taller and there is an ever growing network of bridges being built to link the top and middle parts of buildings. Julik is home to the King of the Woodwither Kingdom, it is currently occupied by the second king, Kolliv Woodwind.

Demographics

It's truly hard to get a consistent demographic due to the sheer size of the city, there is plenty of room for error. Humans appear to be the most dominant species found within the city although it is believed they only make up about 40% of the species there. Any person with notable wealth lives within the seventh district of the city, as the king prefers that the wealthiest and more mild mannered citizens be closer to him. In terms of professions, you can do anything in Julik, that is part of the reason it attracts so many people. Magical jobs, construction, farming, store owner even some more illegal things. Julik truly has it all.

Government

The government of Julik is quite unique. Do to the size of the city it has been split up into seven different districts. The districts are divided into a spoke and wheel pattern while the seventh district acting as the spoke in the middle of the city. Districts 1 through 6 each have a governor who is responsible for the well being and laws of the district. The seventh district is directly ruled by the King, the king also has the power of creating laws that can be applicable to other districts. Each of these districts essentially acts as its own city. They employ their own guards, a majority of their own laws and have their own economy. Traveling between the first six districts is quite simple there is only a fee of 2 silver pieces to go back and forth. To travel into the seventh district one must obtain a letter of passage from someone who lives within. Often times when jobs are hiring within the seventh district they hold their interviews and such in a different district, this prevents a stream of noncitizen from getting into the seventh district.

Defences

Ever since King Woodwind decided to stop expanding Julik outwards they have put up twenty foot tall stone walls that are about six feet in width. These walls operate as walkways for archers and guardsmen. Built into the wall are wooden hatches that can be removed to allow spears and arrows to be shot out of. The layout of the city acts as almost a natural defense as the city has millions of winding roads, bridges and stairways. It is quite easy to get lost and lose ones bearing inside the city. Each district is separated by check points and smaller thinner stone walls. So getting between districts would be quite inconvenient. There are a plethora of watch and guard towers that act as barracks as well as civilian shelters in case of invasion. Finally the seventh district is protected by a thirty foot steel wall that is capable of being heated to scalding levels to protect from intrusion.

Industry & Trade

The complex and unique economy of Julik is kept in place by the thousands of different jobs that can be found in the city. The most unique of these jobs is a Grass Trimmer. These are people who are sent outside the city to keep the uniquely tall grass that grows in Ollurve at a manageable height and distance away from Julik. There is always a high demand for Trimmers as the job can be dangerous and the grass grows at an extremely fast rate.

Infrastructure

The construction industry thrives within Julik. There is always something new being built, thousands of bridges exist in the city. Most of the buildings, roads and bridges are built from some form of cobblestone or brick. Because of the massive size there is no definitive landmarks or buildings that support the city. That is of course with exception to the palace that resides in the middle of the city, which runs as the top governing force and the home of the king

Guilds and Factions

The most notable guild is the wizards guild Heroes Court. Their main headquarters is located in District 2 but in order to reach and serve citizens that need them in other districts they have small outposts that wizards will operate from a few days at a time. The guild is recognized by the government and all wizards of the guild are allowed to travel freely from district to district as a thanks for the services they provide.   There is also a notorious thieves guild that lies somewhere deep in the metropolis. They're known as The Black Greed , not much is known of these thieves outside of the mark they leave once they've stolen from someone is a black paint golden coin that is stuck to the front door for all to see. The Black Greed are known to be up for hire for specific jobs, only one member had ever been caught, unfortunately while he was being escorted to jail the wagon containing him was jumped and he escaped. No one knows what happened to the guards who were escorting the member.

History

Julik started as a tiny settlement but grew quickly as people began to realize that the tall grass grew slower in the area. The flatlands of Ollurve allowed for easy and rapid expansion and people began quickly flocking to what has now become the biggest city in Altheria.
