Half-Elf Species in Alterra | World Anvil

Half-Elf

Half-elves are born from a human and an elf. As such, they are often not accepted into the society of either of their parents. They are often forced to roam away from their parents, alone and unwanted. There are, however, families of half-elves that exist in the world now. Within these families, they often live much as humans do, although they live out the middle section of that life for quite a bit longer. Living to around 200 years of age, half-elves have a long time to consider their lives and often change paths more than once. Since they mature at the same rate as humans, they are almost indistinguishable in personality until they reach an older age.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Half-elves look quite similar to humans and, in many cases, try to pass themselves off as one. However, they do retain some of the features from their elven ancestry. Their ears are often more pointed than humans, leading many to wear hoods as a method of hiding. They are also more slender and graceful than humans, though this can be passed off as being skinny in most cases. The hardest to hide, though, is that the features of their faces are smaller and tighter than the average human.

Genetics and Reproduction

Half-elves are unique in their reproduction by nature of being a hybrid race. When half-elves have children, it is almost always a half-elf. However, there are rare occasions where genetics and a spur or strange luck cause the child born between two half-elves to be nearly entirely human or elf.

Growth Rate & Stages

Half-elves mature at the same rate as humans, reaching adulthood by the time they are 18. The one way they do differ is in the development of their brains. While human brains continue to develop until they are 24 or 25, a half-elf's brain will develop until they are about 50 years old.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Although half-elves do not maintain the uncanny ability to perceive that their elven ancestors possess, they are capable of seeing in the dark.
