Magical Beast

Faeries are not the only fantastical beings in the world of Altairus; there exist several species of magical beasts that do not classify as faeries, but still possess incredible magical powers and wisdom. Two of these magical beasts, a Light unicorn and a Dark dragon, flank the border of the Anima Sigil in the Sigil of Altairus.

Defining Characteristics

Magical beasts share some characteristics with faeries, but not all:

• Magical beasts are magical creatures; they possess powerful magical abilities and collapse into their base element upon death.
• Unlike faeries, magical beasts possess animalistic forms. They may be quadrupeds, have fins instead of limbs, or have non-articulate hands, but their bodies are distinctly non-humanoid.
• Magical beasts are almost always sapient, though they may or may not be capable of speech. Not speech that all sapient beings can understand, anyway. Even non-sapient magical beasts possess intelligence greater than non-magical or semi-magical creatures.
• Magical beasts do not form civilizations. They typically live in the wild areas of Altairus, where they live alone or in small packs.

Ancients

Faeries and magical beasts that live an excess of 1000 years or more achieve "ancient" status. These beings are usually substantially larger than their kin, and they are always substantially more powerful, considered minor gods in their own right. Despite faeries not being able to die of old age, ancients are incredibly rare. They are revered as protectors and sources of incredible wisdom.
