Altairus Portals
In days passed, magical portals allowed denizens of Earth and Altairus alike to travel between worlds.
Not all natural portals appear in the middle of nowhere, however. There have been many cases of natural Altairus portals spontaneously appearing within people's homes. When this happens, the portal usually appears in a child's room or an art studio. It has been hypothesized that natural Altairus portals are more likely to appear to people who have a great imagination, whether they be children or creative types. This would explain why natural portals tend to appear in these rooms. It would also explain why these people tend to be the ones who see Altairus portals most often.
Constructed Altairus portals, on the other hand, are deliberately made with the express purpose of being Altairus portals. In the Golden Era, a few wealthy Earth families constructed ornate doorways in their homes to serve as Altairus portals. The doors on these structures were marked either with the Altairus Sigil or the Anima Sigil to denote their purpose. A special magical ritual was used to activate these portals, and they typically did not change which location within Altairus they led to. Constructed portals were used particularly to assist with diplomatic affairs between humans and faeries.
Any natural portals that were open simply ceased to exist on Earth. Constructed portals are still present in the homes in which they were built, but the doors only lead to brick walls and closed-off passages. Since the portals were closed off, Anima no longer travels between worlds either, so the old magical rituals used to open the portals, even if they were still known, no longer work.
With no Altairus portals, there is no way to travel between worlds. Perhaps some day, though, this will change...
Manifestation
Altairus portals can be either natural or constructed. Natural Altairus portals are ones that appear without any interference; they typically pop up in natural areas where trees, rocks, or other natural structures form a "doorway." Portals of this type are immediately recognizeable due to the shimmering colors present in the doorway itself and the change in environment that can be seen through the doorway. Passing through these doorways allows one to traverse between worlds. Not all natural portals appear in the middle of nowhere, however. After the War of the Wendigoes
After the War of the Wendigoes, all of the Altairus portals were sealed. Reeling from the devastation the war had wrought on their world and disgusted with the humans' actions, many Altairians believed it to be in their best interest if the two worlds did not interact any more. While there was some pushback from certain groups like those in the Nursery Rhyme District, the various governments and societies in Altairus reluctantly voted to have the portals closed.Any natural portals that were open simply ceased to exist on Earth.
