Kaškeya: Prison Island
Inescapable Prison Island
In the Kingdom of Las Islos, there is an island resting fifty miles away from the shores of the East Coast. Meandering off in the south east seas, the island came to be an inescapable prison accessible only by boats. It was built in the Hilael Conquest Era, when Astorian Kingdoms were being born. Before Las Islos became corrupt, the island was originally inhabited by the Keys Family, until their whole family was killed over a gambling game gone wrong. Ten years after the murders, the island went under construction and was named Káskeya.Purpose / Function
Kaskeya is completely controlled by the government of Las Islos. However most of the prisoners sent there don’t just come from Las Islos or other Astorian Kingdoms, since Kaskeya is such a high profile place and the only prison surrounded by water on all sides in Mahka Nata. Many kingdoms have security contracts with Las Islos. Security contracts give kingdoms a quota on how many people they can send to Káskeya as well as a law enforcement team to transport the prisoners. Those in contract with Las Islos is the Hilael kingdoms; Khasut and Kaliq-Hala, and Astorian Kingdom of Apawichak’ya. Adairians of any kingdom or culture don’t need a contract but can still be sent away.
Las Islos has two harbors and many ports. The Second Outer Harbor is where all the transport boats are docked and travel from. Kaskeya can only be entered and exited by marked boats only coming from the Second Outer Harbor. Kingdoms and Law enforcement are responsible for transporting prisoners to the Second outer harbor by using the many sea ports and rivers. From there the Second Outer Harbor has its own special team in conjunction with Kaskeya for transportation of prisoners, guards, food, and medicine.
Alterations
The island was first home to a grand house. In 1070, ten years after the murder of the Keys family, parts of the house were either demolished or reconstructed. It began housing inmates in 1080 with a capacity of two hundred people. Construction was then later finished 1134 with a capacity of 3000.
After the Riot of Kaskeya, the inside infrastructure was completely damaged. Walls were broken down, exits and entrances were sealed. A metal fence was put up surrounding the perimeter of the ground floor. The ground floor became known as Key’s central. Key’s Central is completely inhabited by all the inmates. Guards are prohibited from entering this area. Floors above Keys Central and the outside are blocked off and can only be accessed by guards patrolling. The only way to get into Key’s central is by a long tunnel with two gates. The outer gate being locked and opened by the guards and the inner gate being locked and opened by the prisoners.
History
The island of Kaskeya itself is gorgeous with sandy white beaches, rock boulders, and many trees. However, what is behind the walls is not so pretty. Guards are to be a floor above prisoners, always looking down at them. The line between guard and prisoner is very much separated. Once a prisoner has entered the gates of Kaskeya, they are locked in on the ground floor, confined only to what is available. Guards are always protected by gates, floors, bars, and never have to physically come in contact with the prisoners. It is pretty much a free for all. The guards maintain security by not letting prisoners free. And the prisoners maintain order and rule by conducting themselves and others. Originally, prisoners were confined to a cell, being escorted to meals and such. A riot happened in 1190 causing guards to abandon their post and leave the island. The military were then sent to the prison to regain control. The riot lasted three days with the culture of Kaskeya being changed. The riot caused a lot of damage to the infrastructure and created many problems. The solution came to be that the ground inside the wall would belong to the prisoners. The prisoners control how they run things by staying in only their area. The ground floor is completely controlled by prisoners. Whereas the guards are allowed around the perimeter, on higherup floors, and cannot go inside the gates to the ground floor. Mainly the guards are just there to supervise, provide basic necessities, keep prisoners from escaping, and prevent riots.
