Wyldbriar
History
The Wyldbriar family was founded in A3 1532 by Bertram Wyldbriar who had previously cleared out the Paleveil lake, where he had slain a hag who was said to have been troubling the folk of northern Arnilva for generations. On the same island which she had her hut, Bertram built the castle known as Blackroot Keep, or at least began it, as it would not see its finished construction before his child Wylliem Wildbriar oversaw its construction. The Wyldbriar family has, since its founding, been viewed as a "unique" family because of their placement, history and their continued shroud of mystery. Though they are viewed with suspicion and worry by some, the family has been loyal to their liege lords of Arnilva since their founding. They are seen as eccentric, but also loyal and endeavouring people, though the Trugarian Empire has questioned their religious beliefs and practises, they still think of them as loyal servants.
The Sting
The Sting is a practice or tradition linked to the Wyldbriar family and has been ever since Bertram founded the family. During the years of maturing, often between 10-15, members of the Wyldbriar family raised in Blackroot Keep are stung by the black thorns that grow from the ever protruding roots beneath the castle. It is unknown if this "ritual" is a family tradition forced upon the next generation or if it is a recurring accident as various cases of The Sting have been told from the family. When a Wyldbriar is stung by these thorns, they are said to gain a "vision" or "prophecy" of their future, something the Wyldbriars believe to be divine guidance to their life's purpose. It has also happened that The Sting has also been the cause of a few deaths among the Wyldbriars over the centuries, which has caused much conspiracy about the validity of these "visions", most declare it as a barbaric tradition involving hallucinatory substances, but the Wyldbriars take pride in their "gift". Perhaps the greatest validity given to these visions is Eadric "The Doomsayer" Wyldbriar, who was born in A3 1 758, 25 years before Dürthang. He was 13 years old when he experienced The Sting. In his visions he saw the world breaking apart as shackles tore themself apart to reveal a seven headed monster, a warrior with a hole in his chest, bells that caused waves across the sea, a black mountain rising higher than the clouds, and a sword rising from a dark room with thousand eyes staring at him. His family had never seen such a violent Sting as the child almost tore himself apart in his seizure. Eadric did not survive The Sting and his family believed him to be mad. This event would be almost forgotten and left unspoken for almost three decades before The Calamity began. Within years of these new horrors, what remained of the Wyldbriar family would begin to understand Eadric's visions to be true, and Wolstan "Demon's Thorn" Wyldbriar took it upon himself to heed the warning his family had been given. He would go on to understand the last part of vision as he found the sword in his vision, Earthbite, a vestige of the god Sylrune. He would wield it during Dürthang until his death by the falling of the Black Peaks.
