Personal history

Liam Windsor was born on the 3rd of Voganir in A4 600 in Bleakburn, originally named Charles William Chalhen after his father John William Chalhen (born A4 582). His mother was Anne Jane Chalhen (born A4 584). Liam was born a twin with a sister named Emilia Jane Chalhen. Their mother was poor and everything they knew about their father was just rumors and stories told to them by their mother and neighbors in the Defense District as he left right after their mother got pregnant. Their father was apparently a Lord from the Center who had either fallen in love with Anne Jane or used her for his own pleasure, once she got pregnant it seemed he was either too scared of what his parents were going to think so he left her in the Defense District alone. They had married, but the priest who did it was unknown and most people believed it to be a lie made by Anne to give her children some legitimacy to one day claim gold from their father. Anne had lost her own mother when she herself was born and her father Jack Windsor had died a year before she got married in the Defense District, she was now scared and alone.   Anne Jane eventually birthed the twins and raised them in her small house in the Defense District while working as an accountant to an almost middle-aged entrepreneur who would later be known as Granny Proper at her publishing company Proper Publishing. The pay was enough to raise her children, but only in a place like the Defense District. Her children were good friends and grew up to be good helpers around the house and the factory. Granny gave them their first jobs when they were seven and their responsibilities only grew with them as they got older. By the time they were 11 years old, they were running all over the Defense District doing deliveries for Granny. Liam, however, got quite good at entering places where he shouldn’t and stealing from homes and pickpocketing. It was also around this time Liam started to feel changes to his body. His body began itching and sometimes his skin would emit a slight glow that stung or even burned. He mostly kept it hidden from both his sister and mother, but after the build up got so out of hand that it felt like it was eating him from the inside, he finally told his mother. She explained what she had learnt about her father from the few people that knew him. They had told her pieces about their lineage and that some in their family were born with a curse. A curse that gave them a burning power which often exploded out from them, hurting both themself and those around. Her father had apparently had the same curse and was known to sometimes use it as a defensive weapon, but often at the cost of his own health. She taught Liam to release the energy in safe areas, and to let enough go that his powers would eventually fade just like her fathers powers had.   After about two years of suppressing his powers, Liam managed to keep them under control and stop his pain. He had also gotten quite good at stealing and during one of his solo heists, he infiltrated the house of Arch Archon Ackeron of The Esoteric Circle, who’s house he had broken into was unknown to him at the time, but he managed to steal a few interesting items and a lot of gold. Liam got home and managed to sell most of the items through a fence in the hollows, it was also then he was informed who he had stolen from, though he thought little about it at the time. Most of the money he earned was given to his mother and the rest was shared with his sister.   With the money that Liam managed to obtain, the family were close to having saved up enough money to move to Farmside. This dream would come to an end in A4 614 on the 17th of Zen’Horir when Liam and Emilia returned home from the factory to find their home broken into and their mother on her knees at the mercy of thugs clad in all black. The thugs didn’t hesitate when the children came in the room, and without a word or a threat slit Anne Jane’s throat in front of her children. Emilia tried to run away in fear and instinct, but Liam had a different reaction. His suppressed energy became active, and he could not hold it in as he burst into a consumption of radiance that consumed and burnt everyone within their house, be them thugs or his sister. His own flesh got burnt by the radiance, but it was nothing compared to the pain he felt when it all fell to darkness and he could see the damage he had done to his sister. Her body was completely scorched and melted, but she was still alive and suffering. She couldn’t move or speak during her last moments spent in her brother's arms, but a look of pure confusion and fear was the last thing Liam would see on his twin’s face.   Liam was broken for a long time after the accident. He had no place to stay as he couldn’t go back to his home because of what had happened and because of the damage it sustained during his burst. He also sought Granny’s help with changing his identity to have the thugs who attacked him, who he was certain was The Esoteric Circle believe that he also perished. Granny helped him set up a false identity which he would with time make his real, his new name was Liam Windsor, Windsor being the maiden name of his mother and last name of his grandfather. The next few years were spent working around the factory and taking on odd jobs given only by Granny, as he did not trust his own judgment after what had happened. He would also meet a girl named Lilly Calder. She was the same age as Liam, and even though he was a stubborn and silent person, she started caring for him as they spent more and more time together, mostly at the Basalt Brew which was the bar they met at.   It didn’t take long before Liam proposed to Lilly, using his mothers ring. The two moved together into a good house, for the Defense District, using the money Liam had saved and some money from Lilly’s parents who were from Grayfall Ginnels. Lilly’s parents didn’t really approve of the marriage, as it was so sudden and since they knew little of Liam, because of this they cut off most ties to their daughter and wouldn’t interact much with her or her family. Liam and Lilly married when they were 16 years old and went on to have their child before they were 17. During the pregnancy, Lilly got very sick and the physician who checked on her was unsure if she would survive. Lilly would eventually birth a daughter, but she had fallen even more ill and was slipping in and out of consciousness during the days after her birth. Liam also noticed that the child had the same burning light inside it that he had only a few years earlier, something which made him extremely nervous and on edge. He also got quite nervous for his wife as the cheap medical examiner they could pay for said that Lilly had burns inside her womb, something which would damage her permanently and might even kill her. It was a storm of events, emotions and decisions to take for Liam, he was overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, fear and anger over what had happened to his wife and what their daughter might one day do to them. Because of everything that happened in such a short amount of time, it is not hard to see how Liam made a bargain with a half-devil who came knocking. His name was Wendall Grimsbane, he was a tiefling and claimed to be a Venthir which were high profile monster hunters and great alchemists. He offered to heal Lilly and give her the remedies to recover and maybe even have children again in the future, but the cost would be his daughter. He told Liam that the Venthirs take in special children and help them learn to control their powers. Liam didn’t think much about the offer as the life of his wife was more important to him than some future problem that was his daughter. He made the deal with Wendall and gave him his daughter. He never named her, but he knew he would recognize her if they ever met again, because of her yellow eyes and birthmark on her shoulder.   Wendall kept his promise and the potions he gave Lilly saved her life. Her recovery was slow, but she woke up after a few weeks and gained full consciousness. She asked where their child was, and Liam told her that it had died in childbirth. The grief she felt and the feeling that something was wrong almost drove them away from eachother for some time.   During this time of sadness and grief for Lilly, Liam continued his work for Granny and had gained a bit more confidence with his own jobs. One of his improvised jobs was driven by childish revenge for his father. He wanted to get back at him, so he snuck into the Center and found their estate. He stole some heirlooms, jewelry and gold, but what surprised him was the tomb in their garden. His curiosity drove him to investigate and he found something that shocked and changed him. He found a hidden part of the tomb with a headstone dedicated to his mother but her surname was missing and there was no mention of Liam or his sister. There were also some legal papers which declared Anne as a servant who had sold her body to John and gotten pregnant, the children never surviving and Anne dying of a drug overdose. This revelation, that his father and their family had completely falsified their existence and his mother’s strife and history almost broke him. He destroyed the headstone and burnt the papers, but he kept the part of the headstone with her name on it. After raiding the tomb, he walked into the estate and knocked out two guards before reaching his father’s office. He walked in with his bloodied hands gripping the headstone piece of his mother’s headstone as he found his father sitting behind a desk with a young girl at his lap. His father was surprised and scared by the sight as he had no idea who the man who stepped up to him was, but as Liam introduced himself, he understood and feared him even more. He tried to reason with Liam and use his new daughter and Liam’s half-sister Evelyn as a shield, but he pushed her aside and dragged his father over the desk as he began pummeling his face in with the headstone piece. After a few minutes, Liam calmed down and looked at the girl who had watched him kill her father in front of her and had a moment of realization that he had become worse than his father and equal to the men who had killed his mother, but nothing could be done about it now. He then walked out of the estate and snuck back into the Defense District.   About a year after Liam and Lilly had lost their daughter, their neighbor's house was robbed and screams could be heard while it happened. Liam didn’t want to intervene or have Lilly intervene as he knew how life in the Defense District had a way of getting people killed if they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Lilly did manage to talk Liam into going in together a few hours after the ruckus was silenced and the robbers had left. They found the couple who lived there dead and bleeding all over the floor. Just when Liam had taken everything useful and was ready to leave before the Black-Berets arrived did Lilly hear a noise. She followed it and behind a few planks in the wall she found a basket with a young baby, not even a year old. He had beautiful green eyes and some brown hair. Lilly begged Liam to adopt him, and for once since they lost their daughter, Liam and Lilly were truly happy together as they found joy in their new son. Liam grew to love him quickly and saw himself in the child, and Lilly was just happy to have a child as she always wanted a big family. They didn’t know if the child had a name as he was under a year old, a time which it was rare to name your child, but they were so happy with him that they gave him one just a few days later, his name would be Alexzander Windsor.   The next decade was difficult for Liam and the family. Caring for Alexzander was expensive and the jobs he got from Granny didn’t pay enough and her trust in him had weakened since the stunt he did in the Center which drew much attention to her as well. This strain ment he got less ambitious jobs, and therefore less silver in his pocket. It did also not help that Liam and Lilly were still trying for more children and over the next eight years after they adopted Alexzander, Lilly suffered four miscarriages. She also suffered from much sickness, almost as bad as her first pregnancy. Since she could not work much during this time, Liam became more desperate and overworked. He took more reckless jobs, often working for thugs, smugglers and other shady people at the Harbor and in the hollows. Liam himself does not know when or how he got addicted to Skudhan, but the Mar’Daharian drug was one of the only things that helped him relax when he came home from work and the only thing that could make him sleep. His behavior also changed during these years and he would become much more aggressive and sometimes go into frenzies of rage where he would become physical against Lilly and their son Alexzander, a habit that got worse and worse for each year.   In A4 627, everything changed for the Windsors. Lilly gave birth to a healthy young boy, and this time without any sickness or much pain. He was a miracle to her and she called him Illidan . His father was happy for a time, until he noticed the same glow and powers that he had hid from for the last decade, and that once made him give up his daughter out of fear. His happiness and excitement died within a few hours of the birth and he began plotting how he could get rid of the child, he didn’t want to kill it, but it had to get out of his family before it lost control like he did in his youth. A few weeks passed, and Liam figured out a plan to get rid of the child. He placed the child in a basket and put it close to the border to Farmside, a place he knew the people and neighborhoods were kinder . He also put a few coins with him so that people could get everything they needed to begin raising him. But to his surprise and dismay, Illidan had returned to his room the next morning, and Lilly was furious after she found out what had happened. Alexzander had followed his father that night and brought Illidan back home, something that infuriated Liam so much that he gave his son the worst beating he had ever given, almost killing him in the act. Lilly managed to get Liam off their child and carried him to a physician who put his arm right after it had been broken by Liam.   The next years were filled with much the same as the ones leading up to Illidan’s birth, but this time Lilly was able to work steady shifts at a tavern in the Harbor, making it possible for them to feed both their sons. Their son Alexzander began training as a Black-Beret, something Liam respected and wanted for his son. He knew how hard it was for him without an education or proper training, and even though he could never manage to say the words, he felt proud of his son. His other son Illidan, however, was beginning to annoy and scare Liam. He would sit in his room for hours, talking to an invisible friend and never finding any real friends.   The year Alexzander turned 16 was a difficult one for the family. Liam had been snitched on by someone, and a full sweep of his house was done by the Black-Beretes. They found an unlicensed shortsword and a relatively large bag of Skudhan. Liam was taken to a work camp for 3 months and had to pay most of his savings to the guards as a fine for his contraband. Liam was sure it was either Alexzander or Lilly, but when he confronted Lilly about it, she took the blame for it and Liam began beating on her in a blind rage. So bad that it woke Alexzander who rushed out to save his mother. He grabbed his mace and knocked the air out of his father’s lungs. He then went into a similar rage and beat his father repeatedly with his fists. His mother eventually got him out of it and tried to talk Alexzander down, defending their father. Alexzander couldn’t take it anymore and left the next day to live his own life outside of Bleakburn. Liam had to spend an entire month resting to recover from his wounds, he had little concerns at the time for his son Alexzander, but with the years away from him he grew to wonder what had happened to him.   Liam got a bit better after Alexzander left as he was getting older and more tired. His son Illidan continued to be weird and talk with his invisible friend. Liam continued to worry about him as he started seeing his son as a walking time bomb, but when he got an apprenticeship to a respected blacksmith when he was 14, his view on Illidan changed slightly. He felt the same respect and some proudness he had felt when his son began training to be a Black-Beret. Illidan also got a tiefling friend who he played with and did some mischief with. He knew that Illidan had a crush on his new friend and he also knew they were gradually beginning to do more and more serious crimes, but nothing compared to what he was doing at their age, so he mostly overlooked it.   That was until Illidan was 20 years old, he had been an apprentice for almost six years and Relich the blacksmith offered him a partnership, something which could lift his entire family out of the Defense District, but Illidan refused and quit his job as he was delving deeper into mischief and crime with his tiefling friend Marcyra Awe. He was furious at his son and he wanted to put an end to their friendship, but Illidan beat him to it. He didn’t know the details, but Illidan and Marcyra stopped being friends after an incident in Farmside where they attacked a shopkeeper and stole from him. The shopkeeper was Olaf Dinkraft who was a blind man, but a dangerous one. He used to be a Black-Beret captain and he was blinded during his service which made him retire. Liam had himself encountered Olaf in his younger years and knew he might want revenge for what happend, after all, he might be blind but his detective friends were not and they might find out what happened and who had attacked him. So without telling his son, he went out a few days later when Olaf was still unconscious after what had happened and smothered him in his sleep, making sure he could never follow up on what his son had done.   The next year, Illidan said he was going to Thrustenwull with his new locathah friend Mezes for Calamity day. Liam didn’t care much for his son’s new fish friend, and did not care much for what Illidan did anymore. He did get worried when the trip that was supposed to last a few weeks turned into months and then years. Lilly said that he had made contact through magical means, but Liam didn’t believe her, thinking she was losing her mind after everything they had been through. The time spent without his children made him wonder what had happened to them all, including his now lost daughter who he never even knew the name of.
