Personal history

Origins (2500 Before the Avatar Battles)

Doresain was a moon elf in Lyseria in its great area before their divine rebellion. But unlike his fellow noble and beautiful elves, he was a savage that could never be replicated or contested by any other elf ever again. He was a monsterous killer who managed to hide in plain sight for many decades while committing his murders. He killed most of his victims with a scimitar, but the less fortunate souls were ripped apart by his nails and teeth. It was also incredibly hard to identify or sometimes even find his victims as Doresain was known for eating his victims or ripping them apart in such a terrible scene that it could take weeks or longer just to identify one victim, but at the rate he killed it was impossible to keep up.   Because of his horrendous acts of violence and pure savagery he gained the attention of a powerful entity known as Orcus. At this time Orcus had just recently become a powerful balor and lord of the abyss, but his powers were that of a true prince already then. Orcus enjoyed Doresain’s savagery and vile acts, so he rewarded him by turning him into the very first ghoul. Doresain continued his vicious acts for years to come with the newfound abilities given to him by Orcus, and when he was finally killed and put down, he became even more powerful. He would go on to serve Orcus in the Abyss, where he would help Orcus take over Thanatos and become his herald and lord of a massive part of the layer known as the Bone Wastes. This would become his kingdom where he would continue to spread his influence and gift to others to fill both the prime world with fear and savagery and when they eventually died, fill his endless wastes with his kind.

Rise of the Ghoul King (1200 Before the Avatar Battles)

As Doresain’s kingdom expanded and his children the first ghouls continued to grow both in the Abyss and the Prime plane his power grew with it. His ghouls were much unlike him, in the way that they were mindless creatures of pure savagery with little hints of strategy and no signs of evolving. He himself also had to give the gift of ghouls to those who impressed him, meaning though his army grew, it was slow and became tiresome for Doresain. His powers were great, but nothing like that of his liege Orcus. With his lust for creation and spreading his gift he asked Orcus for greater control over the undead. And in return for his aid during his takeover and continued loyalty he was given a shard of divinity which would raise his position to that of a demigod. He was remade by Orcus and would officially become the Ghoul King.   With his powers increasing rapidly and the gift of creation at his fingers, Doresain began to mold new undead creatures into his domain. His first gift to his ghouls was the ability to transmit ghoul fever with their bites that would turn those who survived encounters with ghouls into more of their kind. An unforeseen side effect of this disease was the creation of ghasts, these were stronger than ghouls in every way. They were created by stronger mortals who succumb to the transformation. Ghasts inspired Doresain to create more powerful ghouls and next came the Putrid ghouls and eventually Gravewalker ghouls or also just known as greater ghouls. Putrid were a stronger version of the normal ghouls which could only be created by the gravewalker ghouls who were the strongest type of ghouls, these ghouls retained everything from their life, but became twisted and evil. But above the gravewalkers were the chosen of Doresain, his gravewalker priests which were the only few who could actually make the gravewalkers, except Doresain himself. His new creations would make the hierarchy of his domain in the Abyss, but also in the prime, as now the ghouls were organized and powerful enough to keep entire groups if not even nations of ghouls maintained. Alongside the stronger ghouls came the Maurezhi who were not undeads, but actually demons who took on the appearance of ghouls. They were also given the ability to steal a consumed victim's memories permanently and the ability to take on their appearance for a limited time. These creatures often served the ghoul groups as leaders or spies. A group of Maurezhi would also personally serve Doresain as spies and guards. These Maurezhi would be known as the King’s Skinwalkers.

Conquest (A1 500)

Doresain’s power increased with his new ghouls and his army of undeath would become feared by many other rulers of the Abyss as its quality and quantity both outshine most lords and some princes. It was therefore obvious to most that Doresain was planning an invasion to another layer to expand’s Orcus’s grasp on the Abyss. Doresain decided to invade the 114th layer of the Abyss which was below Orcus’s which was the 113th. This layer was owned by the former devil Dazzagthan who was corrupted by the Abyss after a failed invasion and stayed in what would become the Melting Waste. Doresain’s invasion was quick and he himself managed to slay Dazzagthan. Doresain feasted upon his corpse until it was nothing but bone left, he showed this bone to his liege Orcus who shaped the demon’s spine into a new weapon for Doresain, the Spinecutter. Doresain renamed this layer of the Abyss the White Waste and gave the Bone Waste area in Thanatos to his champion Kvelshmot who ruled it in his place.

Capture (A3 850)

Doresain managed to grow in power and influence because of his new position as a recognized demon lord. His loyalty and service to Orcus was well known throughout the abyss, but he would not remain subservient to Orcus forever, though this was not his choice. A new lord of the abyss had recently been making a name for himself after the fall of Malcanthet, his name was Graz'zt . Graz’zt was one of the most ambitious demons that ever lived and his goal to climb the chaos of the abyss included a powerful servant such as Doresain. While Orcus had his army in the layers of the demogorgon to challenge his title as the king of demons, Graz’zt managed to sneak into The White Wastes and challenge Doresain and his army. Even though Graz’zt had the smaller army his strategy to reach Doresain who controlled them all gave him an advantage. The battle between the two demon lords was quite quick and still not fully understood. It is said that Graz’zt was never struck by Doresain before having him down on his knees as an obedient follower. Many rumors of the battle refer to a phylactre that was used to trap Doresain’s soul and control him with it. This imprisonment gave Graz’zt access to his ghoul army and Doresain’s powers. With it Graz’zt continued his crusade against other layers of the Abyss, while he managed to form his domain of Azzagrat which were combined of three layers, he did leave the White Wastes alone as he wanted nothing to do with Orcus when he returned. When Graz’zt was done with his conquering of Azzagrat he imprisoned Doresain in a specially made prison where he would be constantly tortured and held weak. While Doresain was as good as dead, Graz'zt would impersonate him to his followers on other planes while leading his army in the abyss.

The New Calamity (Year o of the Calamity)

Almost a thousand years of imprisonment and torture had passed since Doresain was taken and used by Graz’zt. Any resolve or escape plan Doresain had planned over the centuries had withered away into nothing and there was no hope for his return or the torture to stop. The only reason Doresain was not outright killed by Graz'zt, which would make Graz'zt’s impersonation of him easier, was because of Doresain’s link to Orcus. When Orcus bestowed him with a shard of divinity, Doresain was permanently connected to Orcus’s godhood, and therefore unable to be killed as long as Orcus was alive.   But much was about to change within the abyss, especially among the demon princes. A change had been brewing both within the abyss and on the prime plane for some decades now and few knew what was going to happen. But whispers of the Chained Darkness’s return was rumored by those who wielded power within the abyss, some even began preparing for his return, and one of these were Graz’zt. When the rumors began coming true and ripples could be felt throughout the entire abyss, Graz’zt was the first to kneel before the newly returned Tharizdun. Other princes and lords were called upon to become part of his new Legion that would conquer the prime plane, and only one of them dared deny his order. Orcus wanted nothing to do with Tharizdun as he remembered the last failure of his against the gods. When Tharizdun heard of Orcus’s betrayal he personally went into Thanatos and executed him with his glaive Nullbane. Orcus’s corpse was then sent into the astral where it could rot among the other gods, while Tharizdun claimed Orcus’s wand and proved his power before all those who dared to question it.   Doresain could feel the death of Orcus in his imprisonment and knew that his fate would soon follow if Graz’zt decided to end him. In this moment of fear and uncertainty he called out to the Seldarine. Surprisingly they reached out to Doresain as they saw pity in him and granted him the need to escape his imprisonment. In return for the Seldarine’s help Doresain gave all elves immunity to the paralyzing touch of his claws and all of his ghouls. He also agreed to not side with the demons during the new calamity and be a neutral party, something he had no issue with. After he was freed he took his army of ghouls back and retrieved his weapon Spinecutter. During his escape plan he ran into Graz’zt daughter Venthrilliax who had served as his favorite spy and seductress, and was often referred to as Graz'zt’s prettiest child. Doresain defeated her easily with his reclaimed army of ghouls and had her be taken with him during his escape. He got out of the abyss and escaped to a place where it would be hard to detect him, a place he could recover in peace. He went into the deep of the underdark in a place so strong with Netherflum that no divination or god could locate him.

The White Kingdom (beginning of the 4th age)

Doresain made his escape from Graz’zt imprisonment and ended up within a massive cave system deep in the underdark filled with netherflum. He and his army would make this their home during the rest of the new calamity and stay under the radar of all demon lords and princes so that he could heal from the damage and torture he had suffered for almost a thousand years. During this time he also began building a new kingdom from the ruins of an abandoned drow city known as Erav Thelonin. By the end of the calamity this city had been rebuilt into the City of Bones, the capital of his new kingdom. He would take much of the underdark after the new calamity as there was little resistance against his army of ghouls. And when the White Kingdom had reached too big to control with his current army he stopped the expansion and would go on to reclaim his name which had been dirtied by Graz’zt. His influence would grow back over some centuries but never as great as it once was. Additionally his powers were much weaker than when he had his layer in the abyss as without a layer beyond the astral gate he could never reach any form of divinity, and would suffer the consequences of being an avatar locked deity.   The results of the new calamity pleased Doresain somewhat as Graz’zt was killed and Tharizdun was banished back to where he had previously been locked up for eons. But the death of his liege Orcus would forever haunt him as he only wished to serve him once again. But without access to the abyss and no connection to Orcus, that goal would be put on ice while he continued building strength. Even though Doresain could not get his revenge upon Graz’zt personally, he could hurt him in other ways. Doresain had currently kidnapped and mortally hurt Venthrilliax, Graz’zt’s daughter. And as the ultimate revenge Doresain bit her, infecting her with his ghoul fever, the strongest version of the disease. The disease would turn Venthrilliax into one of his kind, an extremely powerful ghoul that retained much of her previous abilities, but now serving Doresain personally and with full loyalty. To make sure the world knew of her turn and new allegiance she was given the title of the Ghoul King's Consort and her new name Vilelaria would replace the one Graz’zt gave her.

Moander The Dead God (A4 300-307)

Centuries of building up a new domain did not come easy for Doresain, even with most of the races gone from the underdark like the drow and duergar, there were still some enemies that even the Ghoul King feared. One of these enemies was Moander, the former god of rot and decay. His remaining minions would often interfere with Doresain’s expansion and kill his ghouls as they were mostly immune to all of their attacks. This annoyance would drive Doresain to lead a full on attack against Moander and his armies. This would turn into a long and costly battle known as the Corpse War. The battles waged on within the underdark for some years before Doresain faced Moander in a battle, a battle between two avatar locked deities. Even though Moander was much older than Doresain and had held higher power, he was now nothing but a withered husk of his former self and after resting within the underdark since the Downfall of the Drow he had lost much of his power. Doresain managed to kill the former god and since he was avatar locked his body was not sent to the astral sea, it was instead fed to his army of ghouls. Some of those who feasted upon Moander’s corpse would turn into Angels of decay, these lucky ones would serve as Doresain’s personal guards. Doresain would also claim Moander’s domains and name to have his few followers now worship him unknowingly.

Intellectual Characteristics

Doresain is often underestimated when it comes to his intelligence and ability to scheme, while not as good as other demon lords like Graz'zt and Dagon, he is still very intelligent and good at scheming. His plots and ploys can take centuries before they take place, but they always do, and often play out just as Doresain planned them. He is a patient schemer, but can be angered out of this mindset into a more predictable beast.
